"The first time I ever really listened to Kyle Kulinski’s show was in the back of a cab last summer. The driver had his phone hooked up through the stereo and was pumping out an episode through the car speakers - loudly, as if looking to convert a captive audience.
“Do you like Kyle Kulinski?”
The driver, Ahmed, was a recent immigrant and apparently a die-hard fan of Secular Talk, the political talk show that Kulinski broadcasts on KZbin. I told him, yes, in fact. I do like Kulinski, had come across his show several years ago, and, all things considered, he seemed pretty good.
“He understands what we’re up against,” Ahmed said. “Like Bernie.”
But I was surprised to hear Kulinski’s name mentioned in the same breath as Bernie Sanders, particularly with such adoration. Because what I did remember about Kulinski’s show struck me as mostly capital-P “progressive” takes on the news - the left wing of the Netroots crowd more than the democratic socialism Sanders has popularized.
It’s an impression that wasn’t entirely incorrect.
“I have no time for philosophical, airy bullshit,” Kulinski tells me from his home in Westchester, New York. “I don’t want to hear about Lenin. I don’t want to hear about Marx. I just want a super plainspoken, straightforward agenda with a straightforward way of selling it.”
With over 800,000 subscribers and nearly 670 million total views on KZbin, selling a progressive agenda is clearly something Kulinski knows how to do - even Democracy Now, the long-standing flagship of progressive media, cannot match his reach on the platform. Chapo Trap House can certainly boast a wildly devoted fan base (and a not insignificant degree of media influence), but their audience is roughly half the size of Kulinski’s.
While Secular Talk might be more likely to be looped in with the progressive networks around Air America and Pacifica alums like Sam Seder than the more resolutely socialist world, Kulinski’s fiery rhetoric, razor-sharp class instincts, and knack for withering takedowns sets him apart from his peers. Judging by his rhetoric alone, he’s closer to a Eugene Debs than a Chris Hayes.
But unlike Hayes, Amy Goodman, or his friend Cenk Uygur of The Young Turks - who began airing Secular Talk on his web network seven years ago - the thirty-two-year-old Kulinski is virtually invisible in the mainstream media. Despite his enormous fan base, his show has never once been mentioned in the obligatory trend pieces on “the Millennial Left” pumped out by the prestige media. Nor has Kulinski’s name ever popped up at all in the New York Times, Vox, the New Yorker, New York Magazine, or the Washington Post, despite his leading role in cofounding Justice Democrats, the organization widely credited with sweeping Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and the rest of “the Squad” to power.
Just last week, his Wikipedia page was deleted. The reason? “There is very simply no [reliable source] coverage of this person,” according to one moderator. In new media, he’s king - the Sean Hannity of the Berniecrat left. In old media, he’s nobody.
I suspect there are a few reasons for that. There is nothing “cool” about Kulinski’s show. (As a friend put it, “‘Welcome to Secular Talk’ sounds like something you’d hear on Egyptian radio.”) His no-nonsense social-democratic politics won’t get him much cred with the Full Communism crowd. He records his show not in Brooklyn or Los Angeles, but in a studio he built himself in his modest Westchester home. His hair is too groomed and his taste in clothes too preppy to qualify as “Dirtbag Left.” Nor has he ever attended an n+1 release party. “Not only have I not attended one,” he says, “I have no idea what that means.”
And yet he’s astonishingly plugged-in for a young man in the suburbs. Wondering how Sanders ended up on the Joe Rogan Experience? Kulinski, a frequent guest on Rogan’s wildly popular show, introduced them. “You make the most sense to me,” Rogan told Kulinski on a recent episode. “You’re a normal person.”
Much like Sanders himself, Kulinski’s show has a massive audience that just doesn’t compute with our media’s understanding of “what the kids want” or even “what the left-wing kids want.”
It’s probably for the best - the very woke and very WASP-ish decorum haunting much of the media world is nowhere to be found in Secular Talk. “Corporate Democrats over-focus on identity as a trick to divert you from the issues that unite us all - class issues,” he said on a recent episode.

Personally, I feel a candidate could only be a "spoiler candidate" if they aren't actually an honest actor. Meaning the only reason that person is running is to take away votes and adversely affect the main/primary candidate. As in, they don't want to win, they just don't want the other person to win. The entire Corporate media ecosystem does PR for one of the three Corporate Candidates, so it's not shocking that the interview was dismissive and hostile. It's really impressive that Williamson was able to deliver powerful and collected answers even with them interrupting her, cutting off her microphone, and trying to rush her. All in all, it's still good that she was allowed on-air to speak, because I don't think it went the way the network hoped.

Now clearly its fine to ask candidates to respond to criticism. And its fine for him to question her on policy, ask why she is running and all that. But to ask her why she is running against biden in the primary? I thought that was the point of a primary lol. Its like going up to one team in a soccer game and asking one of the players: "Why is your team still playing, why haven't you forfeited yet?" If that is not what you meant, then I say, “Nice to finally meet you Mehdi! Just to be clear, I am not claiming I know Mehdi’s opinion based off this or any other interview. Only Mehdi, not you, not I, or anyone else, can claim what his actual position or perspective is for Marianne as a challenger. You may be right, you may not be, so due to this fact, I think you should be more reasonable and less ‘wanna be omniscient’ about what goes on in the minds of people other than yourself. Based on Mehdi’s question, that is a legit question whether it’s his opinion or not, ma dude. Marianne has to answer it either way. So she has to be attentive enough to answer that criticism in a reasonable way that addresses it and shuts it down. So I ask, please don’t just blame only the messenger unless they’re blatantly dismissive or Tucker Carlson/ Sean Hannity-esque in their interviews. Medhi Hassan knew exactly what he was doing. The reason he started with the "You aren't a serious candidate" talking points and then goes into "What are your policy positions?" is because it frames the conversation in a way so that whatever follows (Medicare for all, student debt relief, etc.) are not "serious" policy positions because they are coming from a "spoiler candidate". He uses tricks like this in all of his debates and contentious interviews. He wants to frame the conversation a certain way so that he's always playing offense and his opponent always playing defense. And if they ever start to poke holes on his argument he quickly cuts them off and moves on to a slightly different line of questioning that often assumes his earlier questions/positions were correct. It's good debate tactics for "winning" an argument on TV, but its fucking disingenuous. And he does this with every guest who's not aligned with his narrative (either on the right or the left). I don't see how Kyle can say he likes/respects this man as an interviewer.

One could say that Medhi was playing devil's advocate. Given what's at stake and his alleged progressive leanings, I was disappointed...saddened even, that he decided on an adversarial stance. Ms Williamson impressively held her own. She's DEFINITELY a serious candidate. I really hope she can cause an upset, even if only just to shift the Overton Window to the left a bit.

@@aaroncarson1770 I can see that angle. And she handled the challenge brilliantly. But my problem with that approach is that it's exactly what every other interview is going to be like, echoing this sentiment that she's not qualified and has no business even trying. You can challenge someone in an interview without that element of disdain and condescension.
@PresidentByNameOnly

@@aaroncarson1770 Hence I said he was probably playing devil's advocate. It's a common trait of British journalists. It's similar to when conservative BBC anchor Andrew Neil challenged conservative commentator Ben Shapiro on his views, unbeknownst to Shapiro that Neil was conservative.

@@PresidentByNameOnly Yes, I agree. I think some of the Williamson fans, which I admittedly am also, have seen a pattern of adversarial journalism in regards to Williamson, which stings a bit, when it doesn't seem so when they interview candidates who take PAC money, but my sense with Hasan, was that he was doing his job, and trying to be fair to Williamson, while simultaneously making it look good for the network also. My only critique really, is that I don't think journalists should dictate who can win.

Medhi is yet another example of the Intercept to lamestream pipeline. Don't know why it keeps happening, bc the Intercept is awesome. The spoiler comment was likely less a reference to Jill Stein and more a reference to Carter. But what they fail to consider is that maybe primary challenges don't weaken a candidate, maybe weak incumbents get challenged, and their general election fate has little to do with the primary.
