"The first time I ever really listened to Kyle Kulinski’s show was in the back of a cab last summer. The driver had his phone hooked up through the stereo and was pumping out an episode through the car speakers - loudly, as if looking to convert a captive audience.
“Do you like Kyle Kulinski?”
The driver, Ahmed, was a recent immigrant and apparently a die-hard fan of Secular Talk, the political talk show that Kulinski broadcasts on KZbin. I told him, yes, in fact. I do like Kulinski, had come across his show several years ago, and, all things considered, he seemed pretty good.
“He understands what we’re up against,” Ahmed said. “Like Bernie.”
But I was surprised to hear Kulinski’s name mentioned in the same breath as Bernie Sanders, particularly with such adoration. Because what I did remember about Kulinski’s show struck me as mostly capital-P “progressive” takes on the news - the left wing of the Netroots crowd more than the democratic socialism Sanders has popularized.
It’s an impression that wasn’t entirely incorrect.
“I have no time for philosophical, airy bullshit,” Kulinski tells me from his home in Westchester, New York. “I don’t want to hear about Lenin. I don’t want to hear about Marx. I just want a super plainspoken, straightforward agenda with a straightforward way of selling it.”
With over 800,000 subscribers and nearly 670 million total views on KZbin, selling a progressive agenda is clearly something Kulinski knows how to do - even Democracy Now, the long-standing flagship of progressive media, cannot match his reach on the platform. Chapo Trap House can certainly boast a wildly devoted fan base (and a not insignificant degree of media influence), but their audience is roughly half the size of Kulinski’s.
While Secular Talk might be more likely to be looped in with the progressive networks around Air America and Pacifica alums like Sam Seder than the more resolutely socialist world, Kulinski’s fiery rhetoric, razor-sharp class instincts, and knack for withering takedowns sets him apart from his peers. Judging by his rhetoric alone, he’s closer to a Eugene Debs than a Chris Hayes.
But unlike Hayes, Amy Goodman, or his friend Cenk Uygur of The Young Turks - who began airing Secular Talk on his web network seven years ago - the thirty-two-year-old Kulinski is virtually invisible in the mainstream media. Despite his enormous fan base, his show has never once been mentioned in the obligatory trend pieces on “the Millennial Left” pumped out by the prestige media. Nor has Kulinski’s name ever popped up at all in the New York Times, Vox, the New Yorker, New York Magazine, or the Washington Post, despite his leading role in cofounding Justice Democrats, the organization widely credited with sweeping Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and the rest of “the Squad” to power.
Just last week, his Wikipedia page was deleted. The reason? “There is very simply no [reliable source] coverage of this person,” according to one moderator. In new media, he’s king - the Sean Hannity of the Berniecrat left. In old media, he’s nobody.
I suspect there are a few reasons for that. There is nothing “cool” about Kulinski’s show. (As a friend put it, “‘Welcome to Secular Talk’ sounds like something you’d hear on Egyptian radio.”) His no-nonsense social-democratic politics won’t get him much cred with the Full Communism crowd. He records his show not in Brooklyn or Los Angeles, but in a studio he built himself in his modest Westchester home. His hair is too groomed and his taste in clothes too preppy to qualify as “Dirtbag Left.” Nor has he ever attended an n+1 release party. “Not only have I not attended one,” he says, “I have no idea what that means.”
And yet he’s astonishingly plugged-in for a young man in the suburbs. Wondering how Sanders ended up on the Joe Rogan Experience? Kulinski, a frequent guest on Rogan’s wildly popular show, introduced them. “You make the most sense to me,” Rogan told Kulinski on a recent episode. “You’re a normal person.”
Much like Sanders himself, Kulinski’s show has a massive audience that just doesn’t compute with our media’s understanding of “what the kids want” or even “what the left-wing kids want.”
It’s probably for the best - the very woke and very WASP-ish decorum haunting much of the media world is nowhere to be found in Secular Talk. “Corporate Democrats over-focus on identity as a trick to divert you from the issues that unite us all - class issues,” he said on a recent episode.

I'm on the Left, but I despised her when she was AG of California. She did everything in her power to try and keep weed illegal, and she basically had an 80's conservative approach to law enforcement. For me, it was always about her policies. And the immediate use of the "race card" is a major contributor to bad faith race relation discussions.

I despise SJW culture with every fiber of my soul... I believe in equal rights, not lowered expectation rights or entitlement rights. Both sides need to realize we live in this country together and need to get along and respect one another. We are walking a fine line of overt hatred of ethnics, immigrants, and lgbt on one side and soft racism (meaning coddling, exceptionality, and low expectations) on the other. I used to be a Democrat. I went Independent. Here are my reasons: 1. Crime- Democrats don't seem to have a real interest in catching and punishing criminals. I want to eliminate the root problems that lead to crime, too, but that's going to take time. Meanwhile we got hooligans and thugs running around terrorizing EVERYONE. You gotta separate them from the rest of society. 2. Guns and self-defense- criminals don't care about laws. Set bans on guns? Lol. A criminal don't care- they'll find channels to get one- you watch and see. Criminalize self-defense with lethal force? OK. But once again criminals don't care. They'll act with impunity while decent folk are forced to be sitting ducks. Cops don't prevent crime. They clean up afterwards and hopefully catch the culprits. 3. And my favorite- woke or SJW sentiment. This was the BIGGEST setback to civil rights and equality since the Civil Rights movement started. No one is better or worse than anyone else purely from identity. What makes us better or worse is our actions and motives. I question today's Black and LGBT activists' motives, just like I question (White) Christian Nationalist and Evangelical motives. Both sides stink like sulfurous rotten eggs. In a good world, we'd be looking for ways to unite than to divide. Oh, and here's 4. Economic inequality- neither Republicans nor Democrats properly address or fix worker rights and redistribution of wealth. Democrats are probably more aligned with this topic than Republicans, but the political leaders will never fight for the working class because they're paid not to by their corporate sugardaddies.

I'm a black guy who wrote in Elizabeth Warren in one election and wrote in Bernie Sanders in the next election. I don't have issues with anyone. Kamala Harris constantly avoids answering questions and doors so in very obvious (often cringy) ways. She also seems VERY inauthentic (giving her the benefit of the doubt: maybe she avoids being her genuine self in fear of racist/sexist voters or the REAL her could simply be as unlikable as Desantis)... That excuses but Doesn't CHANGE the fact that she SEEMS overly inauthentic and THAT doesn't inspire people to support her.

I went to law school and nobody said to talk in circles and repeat the same word 7 times in 10 seconds like Kamala Harris does. Also, I had never heard someone utter the statement that to get your point across you should repeat the same sentence 3 times. I mean cmon. I'd like to add that in law school, it is not part of the standard teaching practice to tell students to repeat themselves like Kamala Harris. This is a serious point that should seriously be taken as serious as serious gets. Law school doesn't teach repetition the way Kamala Harris speaks. I'm not sure what that lady was talking about, but as a lawyer, that is just not something we are encouraged to do in speeches the way Kamala Harris does.

Registered republican here, though only in name. I have been meaning to change my documented affiliation for a while now but it gets real easy to get caught up in life and everything else going on. That said, despite viewing myself on the left nearly everyone in my immediate social circle is on the right, and the things like the view is doing here is something many of those around me tend to grab ahold of and use to catastrophize. There is a narrative among my community that 'the left' does not believe people belonging to minority groups and women should ever be criticized at all or it is a hate crime and that philosophy across the board for anyone remotely involved with the democratic party. This is a complete oversimplification, and most people are much more reasonable then the ladies on the view or politicians who deflect from the real issues to protect their wallets and reputations. All the same what the view did is the perfect example of something the right will hijack to push a narrative about liberals to manipulate their voters. With all this in mind I am grateful you made this Kyle, allows me to give something to use as proof that the left has more competent people behind it then we see on tv.

Hmm As a professional editor, there are two ways to use 'threes' to make your communication more effective. The most famous is, 'Tell them what you're going to tell them. Tell them. And tell them what you told them'. This is a summary of what you should do in the course of an entire speech, article, or essay. i.e., it's what you should do in the 'introduction', the 'body', and the 'conclusion'. Harris is NOT doing that in these examples. She's instead repeating the SAME PHRASE three times in a row. This is 'closer' to the second 'rule of three' in communication, which is to use three DIFFERENT supporting points to back up or defend a given idea, objective, or point. In contrast, repeating THE SAME phrase THREE TIMES (or even TWICE) is how you jar the listener or reader out of rapport with the speaker or writer.
