I think that's a good summary. If you think back to makeup we used in say, the mid 90s, there were plenty that were just awful--wouldn't apply smoothly, would crumble when applied, application color entirely different to the way the product looked, and so on. I can't say MOST products were like that, but it was a far more common occurrence! And these days that sort of thing seems rare.

But the technology has caught up and most products are actually very very good now. So there is no room for mediocrity in a crowded market of great products.

It’s got to be comfortable and cover the lips in one swipe and where well and have flattering shade choices. Just being comfortable is not enough anymore. It’s a tough market out there

Allison! I feel this great sense of relief that I finally said it. She is an amazing makeup artist. There is no doubt about that. But I have yet to try a product from her that I truly love. I know the highlighter and blush are wonderful. But no better than any others. And those eye pod things had no color to them. It was like putting my brush on some cement. I don’t get it. And I know that it’s a luxury price tag like so many others but at least with a Tom Ford Eyeshadow Palette it’s beautiful. I know it’s too expensive but at least it’s beautiful. I would love a review on NON-MEH make-up. There is a lot of meh out there. I would love to learn about something innovative in each category. I agree with you on Westman Atlier, and I wanted to love it, but it was a meh experience. Kosas (and merit lipstick for that matter even thought you didn't mention it) are sad meh-up. All Ph reactive make up is meh after the first application. It is fun the first time around just to find out what kind of pink you are :). Thanks for the video.

Loved this title! There is a lot of Meh stuff out there. I have not tried the new Tarte skin tint but, I bought last year’s version. And it was a Meh for me. I also tried Selena Gomez Rare Beauty Positive Light Tinted Moisturizer last year too. Which I found really beautiful. It plays better with my skin care and spf. It laid down better and some better coverage. This year I am trying out the new skin tint by Saie. So far I like it but, not better than the Rare Beauty. This is a great subject as the cost of these products has increased. Including drug stores. I want better for my money 😊

This is a me issue and not a Meh issue but Christian Audette, Lisa Eldridge and Natasha Denona lipsticks sit funny on my lips. I truly don’t know what the problem is but to make them work I always have to use a lip liner base and have to add gloss for the matte formulas. I just reach for my Revlon and L’Oreal lipstick and save myself the hassle.

Totally true. Such a subjective thing. I just look at performance really and I think most products perform really really well. It’s hard to find a product that isn’t comfortable these days and doesn’t perform well. Even those silly little Tarte liquid blushes perform well enough I suppose. The concept just made me laugh. But you are absolutely correct. It’s totally subjective. Sometimes it’s fun to have a little make up rant.

Agree. Some brands just don’t appeal to me. Other brands are going to be better for me. I don’t like things that feel juvenile but also don’t need luxury. I do read labels because I’ve found some ingredients have a consistent pattern of fail on my skin and wear preference though I can easily think of positive attributes of the same product.

MEHKUP!! Love this video!! I love how you frame and describe all these products always with the caveat that it’s just makeup. I love how hearing you take about Gucci😂 The LYS and Gucci palettes make my head spin! I know you said the formula is ok with decent payoff but the pan layout is maddening! One new product I recently tried that is meh is the Basma foundation stick. I love the packaging and it applies well but it’s just ok. I honestly don’t know what I was expecting, but I’m just trying to use it up and never use it again. Ok, who am i kidding, I know what i was expecting, transformation. That’s what I wanted. I want my foundation to give me that damn it girl look and this just gives, ok/meh. 😂

I think, with the LYS, my problem with that particular palette is the shades and the way they are arranged. Perhaps if it were in normal pan layout the color story wouldn’t seem as weird? Everything about it just ends up annoying me because of the layout of the pans. So I totally agree with you. What else is Basma gonna do? They must’ve done something else other than the stick. They are still kind of an unproven entity really

Lots of people will disagree with me but I was a bit let down by the Rare Lip Oils. The shade Happy was supposed to be a cool pink but it was very red on me and looked too similar to the shade Hope. Nice lip oil? Sure. Good stain? Sure. Shades were meh though. And I experienced a dry feeling on my lips about an hour later. Shame.

Yasmin, I agree with you. I think there are so many other brands that did that lip gloss that turns to lip stain idea so much better. And there’s no room for mediocrity. If we want a lipgloss that turns to a lip stain, merit, for instance, did it a lot better and a lot less drying. Even the Huda product is less drying than the rare. Rebecca, I think we all understand exactly what you mean or some are very much deceiving themselves if they claim not to. We've all encountered products that are simply 'bad' or do not perform or look good. We totally understand products that thrill us to bits and entice us to buy over and over, yet most of all we all get the products that leave us feeling blank or questioning why we bought it in the first place. If there is anyone that doesn't get what you explained, they haven't ever experienced a truly great product or know what it feels like to hit the jackpot! Whatever that was that went on your cheeks, looked like cooking oil and left my eyes feeling watery when shown close up! Most of all, brands need to be aware of products that simply don't perform nor have the customer excited enough to come back for more. We don't pay all that money for 'meh', yet WOW!!! Kris! Cooking oil is a great descriptor. Totally true that’s so funny. I thought of this because I realized I very rarely give a scathingly bad review of a product. And I started to wonder why that would be. I realized the technology allows for most products to be usable and good. When I was a kid, we had products that literally fell apart or stained the skin and wouldn’t move. Products that got in your eyes or routinely caused breakouts in anyone who used it. Nowadays, it’s all pretty good. So I realize the bad review really is a mediocre review, a product that doesn’t need to exist and is boring. That’s the worst we get these days but we expect so much more and should. Especially for the money that we pay!

A good morning to you Rebecca I jumped on the UD Naked sin mini palettes. And returned it. Zero staying power for hooded eyes and the dark brown was un bendable. However, for dry under eyes. The new Nars corrector, chef’s kiss! Shade Impossible dream. Just wish Nars had more shade ranges than 5. Jumps from golden yellow to dark peach.

I agree with the tarte. The shades are so off. I got the neutral which I am normally in the neutral category but it was way too dark for me. I felt the glow was too much and I love a glow. I don’t mind the low coverage I don’t like full coverage in summer but it was the shade and too glowy for me. I have yet to find a ph product that I like. They all seem to be the same pink color. I don’t see how it’s ph if they are all the same.

Dawn, what makes me laugh about pH changing products is that, theoretically, everything is pH changing. It’s the reason sometimes a Charlotte Lipstick goes orange on us. The ones that are specifically called pH changing just go the same vomit color of pink. Makes no sense. Gimmick to the max

I haven’t tried any of these! I really would like to try the Westman tint. It’s on my make up list. It’s so expensive that it’s just stayed there for a while. I’m not sure if it’s forth the price tag if it’s just fine. I’d love to try it but not for the price tag😊

My only issue with that skin tint is that it’s oil based. I just don’t like anything oil based. It doesn’t clog my pores or anything like that but I just always think it has a texture and smell that feels like I took grease and put it on my face like chip grease. I just can’t do it. Haha. Oh, and the price tag too of course!

Haha, a fun one this morning! Westman Atelier...it has its place for me...I use it for an apres ski type of thing or when my skin is irritated...its very soothing and will probably buy it again on sale. The biggest Meh for me this year was the Dior Natural Nude and the Guerlain Terracotta...I just felt meh when wearing it. Biggest, most surprising wow was Chanel Les Beige foundation...no one talks about and its so beautiful and long lasting. Alot of stuff out there with very little innovation...

That is an interesting one. It was a Cream Foundation that the jury was kind of out on for a while. And I think, the test of time has not been kind to the product. That’s a very nice way of saying that I think as we all look back on it, we realize we really don’t use it very much and weren’t that impressed with it. So I agree with you.

The recent releases that I felt were "meh" for me were the Victoria Beckham eyebrow pencil (new Jane Iredale is much better for my very sparse brows) and the Nars liquid blush (many other liquid blushes have seemed better). My sensitive skin really likes all the makeup from Westman Atelier and the Superloaded Tinted Highlighters are among the best of everything that I have ever tried. Not crazy about the WA liquid foundation and haven't used much of the bottle, though. New Kosas lipstsicks are usable but not eager to buy more. I feel like every single thing i have ever tried from Tarte and from Chantecaille has been just meh, at best.

Lisa! I do indeed agree. The Westman skin care has a lot of fans and I think there’s a good reason for that. Chantecaille eyeshadow has never thrilled me. And the Victoria Beckham eyeshadow pencil is good but not worth the price.

I am so glad. I’m just not a fan. I don’t like the oil base and the lack of coverage. I have a few people I know who are dry to the point of peeling and they need an oil and I guess that works for them but for the rest of us there are so much better products out there for so much less money

Oh it’s so true. The prevalence of clean beauty might be wonderful for the environment but it hasn’t been great for our checking accounts. There is definitely a pressure to use them up before they go bad. I think the cosmetics industry kind of hoped it would make us buy more because they expire but I think it’s actually having the opposite effect. It’s just making us feel like we need to buy less so we can use it Before it goes bad

This video is so much fun. I don’t know what I was thinking when I tried the WA foundation drops. I ordered it from Sephora and couldn’t send it back fast enough. It was, in my opinion a hot mess. In hot, humid south Florida makeup can be a challenge in the best of times. An oil based product just didn’t work. I think WA is an over priced meh brand. The only Gucci products I own are a blush and a bronzer. I really like them but, will absolutely agree they are overpriced. Gucci has some pretty lipstick shades but the fragrance 🤢. I hate to say this but Lisa Eldridge lipsticks just look horrible on me. They swatch beautifully. Her mattes are pigmented and comfortable, same with the satins. But, they look so bad on my lips. I do like her lipgloss but I hate the chunky container. Her eyeshadows, I find to be very pretty. I just don’t reach for them. Natasha Denona lipsticks just move all over my face. I recently used my friend’s Wet N Wild foundation, (photofocus foundation dewy in soft beige). I was blown away! It’s a light to medium, no oxidation on my skin. Soft beige is a perfect match for me. It sets and is prettier than Chantecaille’s Future Skin. It also didn’t emphasize texture, pores or lines on my normal /dry skin. Plus at Walmart it cost me a whopping $5.47! It really has become my foundation of choice.😊

Jan! Your comment here is proof positive that make up innovations are closing the gap between drugstore and luxury. This means luxury has to bring it to justify the price. WA does not justify the price. It is subtle and pretty but it can be beaten. It really can. Gucci I think does lovely bronzers and blushes. For sure but eyeshadow, they just need to stop trying frankly.

Debbie! Think back years and years ago. Remember most products were either very good or incredibly bad. There was no real in between. And now pretty much the technology has caught up and everything is really fairly good. Honestly. It’s tough to find an uncomfortable lipstick now. Whereas they used to be the standard back in the day. Therefore, there is no room for mediocrity and it clutters our drawers.

Westman Atelier drops are not my favorite of her line but I certainly don’t dislike it. I would spend my money on other products of hers I like better. Super loaded highlighter, vital sticks, bronzer, contour and blushes

I would like to add the makeup by Mario blushes. I don’t see the big deal of them.. they are pretty to start but they don’t last and the colors are not life changing. If you already own pink cream blush than you’ll be fine with skipping it in my opinion. Also I agree with all your choices here . I’m not sure if it’s a fail for me or just Meh, but I was influenced to try the benefit fluff up brow wax (my usual Charlotte tilbury brow fix was out of stock) and I will never repurchase that. The packaging was cheap and the product doesn’t really work that well… and it is so bulky and ugly sitting there with all of my pretty things. Ok I totally hate it, it isn’t just meh. Anything in this category doesn't stay in my collection. I know I can find something really pleasing instead. I have also developed brand bias based on experience with shades, formulas, overhype and other factors ... I go with that to narrow my shopping options. It helps me focus when there are so many new releases. Mehkup brands for me... Charlotte Tilbury (gasp), WA, Lisa Eldridge (double gasp), Hermes, MBMario. Chanel and Dior are becoming disappointing as well.

Meh was the caliray skin tint for me. That price per ml is so high that I can do better. Skin tints in general aren’t a good value with how much product is used per application so I’m not being too harsh with this one. The Rare Beauty bronzers new shades are meh. The product is meh. It gives a pretty color but the formula leaves a finish that emphasizes curves and planes on the face unless it’s powdered to change the finish. Both great brands with good mission statements.

And, for me, their skin tint doesn’t even go into the mediocre category, it goes firmly into the fail category. I disliked that skin tint so much that it took me a while to be able to open up to the rest of the brand because of it.

I absolutely agree Westman atelier is so overpriced and doesn't worth price tag. I tried their contour stick I didn't really understand the hype about it, only 3 shades! Biscuit is too light another one is too dark. Ridiculous! Color range is very poor in most of their products and quality is not better than many other brands. I don't get it and I am not paying for it. I also never spent my money on Gucci Hermes and other ridiculously priced makeup where you pay for the name and not for the quality

And if you took, say, a $90 in American dollars Tom Ford Palette and blind tested it against a really good drugstore pallet, I think we all might be a little bit surprised. The technology is catching up and the differences are closing. Maybe it isn’t that all make up is wonderful. Maybe it’s that all make up is mediocre and some just don’t even make that standard?
