She probably survived the great famine of 1958 to 1961. The famine was caused by bureaucratic bungling and the government never asked the world for help because they didn't want to lose face. Tens of millions starved to death so it's understandable that mother-in-law doesn't like to throw food away. My mother lived through the Great Depression and would almost cry when food went bad and had to be thrown away. Mother-in-law went through times that were much worse.

As a Nigerian living in Finland for 5 years, I was telling my husband that I am still trying to understand the culture and it is still very complicated for me. He said the most complex culture to understand is the Asian culture; Japan, Chinese. I told him, I feel I understand them better because we share the same values, and their food is so diverse just like in my country. I am beginning to realize that probably the reason why it is difficult for me to learn Finnish is because it is difficult to interact with locals. Every one here keeps a straight face and it is very hard to penetrate. I see rose going to the neighbors house without an official invite, and serious planning compared to here 😅. Awww......I feel for you, must be really hard to adjust especially since we Africans are naturally warm people while North Europeans where you are are said to be cold blooded, too formal, some say unfriendly and even unkind. They do tend to think I'm too loud, as an American, but that's because they're towns are so small than even when they're outside they use thier "inside voices" 🤷‍♀️. I think the OP is having trouble because the Fins really ARE a totally unique people in Europe and the world. Many assume Finnish people are Scandinavian, but they aren't. They're sort of similar to both Scandinavians and Germans, but also totally unique. I've met and befriended several Finnish folks in school and honestly it's a big cultural divide for me, and Americans have a strong connection to Europe. They're just a very unique people 🤷‍♀️.

I'm almost 60. I buy fresh veggies, so excited to make a dish. But it is too easy to make too much because the veggies are fresh. It was easier when I had a garden to go and get what I needed for the day. I don't like living in the city with no outdoor space to grow. Can't go to the store every day, yet don't have fridge space to hold much. When you make good food, you don't want to waste it, but you also don't want to be sick eating bad food. When you waste food, you can't help but think of the times when you don't have much food and wish you had what you wasted. I stir fry in one of my woks almost every day. It doesn't look like enough when I am preparing, but after cooking I feel like I am sitting down to a feast. Home cooking is made with Love, so a part of you feels like you are wasting love. It is a good life to have neighbors to share food and company and love.
