But from what I've seen there is more hypocrisy in the church than people that don't believe. Some of the most hateful people I've ever met went to church ever time the door opened. I don't see a Devine plan in any of this hate. And as far as Trump being Devine? The man has broken almost every commandment sent to us from God how does that work?

If your church experience is this dysfunctional, try a different church. There are many, and there are really good people, loving folks, in many churches. When people distinguish themselves as Christians by whom they hate, not whom they love, they are VERY confused, and they can do great harm. Jesus was not an American! We, as Christians, are more closely related to Christians all over the world than Americans who use religion as a weapon. Water (of baptism) is thicker than blood.

I was raised as a Southern Baptist, with many hours of my young life infused with Bible Study, Sunday School, choir & “fire and brimstone” theology from a somewhat charismatic minister. After adulthood, I read and studied the entire Bible (New Revised Ver.). But through all, I came away with believing that the “red letter” words attributed to Jesus in the New Testament are the most valuable for me. As it turned out, I left my last church when the preacher started going off on the sins of “gays,” with his face turning red as he built his sermon to a wrong-headed conclusion that gays are damned. I missed the “climax” of his hate, anger and condemnation and walked out of that church alone, never returning.

I am independent but forced to be a Democrat because we lost the Republican party. I am a Christian, and I no longer go to church. In 1975, a Presbyterian Church member left a cassette in my mailbox and asked me not to call. She had evert right as I would call her in the middle of the night while drinking. After I did get sober with the AA program 47+ years ago, I tried going back to that church. I was very uncomfortable, and I just didn't fit in. I even talked to the new minister about it. I never fit in and don't fit in many places in life. Mainly, I am left out of invitations or not spoken to, or if someone responds, it's quick and gone. I was 39 when I got sober, I'm 86 now. I am female. I'm a pleasant, compassionate person. Now and then, I will go to church with a friend. I recently took a 94 year old to the Church of Religious Science. It meant a lot to her. I survived it. I've taken my ex-husband to the Catholic Church and attended Mass with him. I went to a Catholic Church with a friend as she invited me. I was not comfortable as it felt cold and unfriendly. At one time in the 90s, I went to a very warm Catholic Church whose priest had services with laying on of hands and prayer meetings. I loved it. Often, I went at 6 in the morning before work. I do not like the judgment, prejudice, and hatred I see. Not accepting people. I'm doing it myself as I write. The experience I have had at church is not the Christianity I want. Despite what they tell me, I am a Christian, and I feel the peace of the Lord. I've been through a lot, but I walk with God. Note: I just reread this! What was I thinking.
@betty76188 ай бұрын
@williamtodd2485 I only am quiet because my body wants to act up. I would be volunteering at Hospice etc. Since I'm an active AA member I get there frequently. The body sometimes rebels and messes with my schedule. I don't make commitments so I don't break them. There are ways to help even from home as I have a few ladies I sponsor. My presence at meetings sometimes can be a testimony. There are Christians that attend AA meetings as well. Sometimes a person speaks up abd says his higher power is Jesus Christ. As you probably know AA is full of people with different religions beliefs, including agnostics and atheists. Most of the ones at meetings I attend are professed Christians. This doesn't mean I won't go to church. If I'm led I will.

Yes it’s the case that the US Catholic Bishops conference is dominated by what is called ‘Conservative Catholicism’ which is at heart an embrace of the idea behind the dominant ideology in fundamentalist evangelical Protestant America today and that is Dominion Theology. Wikipedia has a great entry on Dominion Theology and essentially it is the idea that God intended America to be a Christian nation with all its laws based on supposed ‘Biblical doctrine’ and that the second amendment of freedom of religion only applies to the various types of Christianity. They absolutely do not believe in the individual freedoms enshrined in a Western liberal democracy. The practical outworking of this belief is that Dominionism says Christians must seize control of all the levers of power and undo democracy so as keep political power permanently and work to turn the US into a “Christian” nation. US conservative Catholics have a huge influence - think of SC justices Alito and Kavanaugh, and especially the late Justice Scalia, then there is Leonard Leo the co-head of the Federalist Society and the man which under President Trump was tasked with selecting and vetting all new federal judges and who openly says that he only picks ‘true conservatives’. Another conservative Catholic is Steve Bannon.

@@bzh7648while I would choose you over a conservative Christian any day, and I think we could likely get along well and respect each other as individuals, this is what I found after decades of studying the Bible and Christian history: The behavior of Trump supporters is not anomalous or at odds with what the majority of the Bible says or models. One of the biggest issues with the Bible is that it’s so full of contradictions, that you could justify almost any behavior with it, good or bad. It is simple fact that the Bible is a wide array of often anonymously authored, poorly translated, and endlessly conflicting ancient texts, compiled thousands of years after originally told, by people. It was heavily influenced over the years by surrounding cultures and changing ideas. There are hundreds of branches because no two groups can agree on exactly which parts are true and valid. No matter how you personally feel about it, that’s what it is. And while I apologize as I know this will sound deeply disrespectful, I find the biblical god to be of even worse character than Trump, which says a lot. I appreciate that more progressive Christians focus on the “love thy neighbor” side, but it doesn’t stop the rest of the Bible from existing or being used to justify atrocities for millennia now.

I quit going to church a long time ago because of hypocritical behaviors. These actions & behaviors have become so much worse. There is more anger, bitterness, grievance & judgment of others in the last 10 years. I choose to try to live my life helping & being kind to others, having integrity & spreading love

You're a good man, Mr. Alberta, and very brave. It takes a massive amount of integrity to put aside one's allegiance to a group to look for Truth, and to abide in the Peace that passeth all understanding. The fear, evident in many, is what is giving rise to the anger exhibited toward ALL they consider 'outsiders', and you seem to be looking for and finding your peace. Well done, brother.

The U.S. Constitution dictate of separation of church and state has purpose. It gives citizens the freedom to worship whatever religion (or no religion) as they so choose. Basically keep religion out of politics. In saying that, if one applies the words of Jesus and reach out in love and look how the words can work today as expressed in love for one another and accept --- love wins. The only way to fight hate is with love. Ken this episode for me was a bit like hearing a "good sermon;" one that answered questions I finally realized I had. Please, have Tim Alberta back on ASAP. I want more of this messaging to reach everyone. Everyone, this is one episode you want to send via email to your radical right family with the message, "Please watch this, then, let's get together for a civilized discussion."

Interesting fact that the US Supreme Court has interpreted the second amendment to only apply to freedom to believe whatever myth you want but it does not protect the freedom to have no belief. This is why we have these “Satanic Clubs” in after school meetings on school property. The background is that the SC ruled that a total ban on prayer in state schools was unconstitutional and that schools had to allow after hours ‘Christian clubs’ as long as they were not compulsory. Later court actions got court rulings that this applied to any religion (eg Hindu’s must be allowed such a club if they want) but when a secular philosophy group tried to claim second amendment rights it was ruled that such only applied to religion. Hence the Satanic clubs were born. The founders of these made up a fake religion based around a fake deity of a Goat with horns (and were deliberately gratuitously offensive to fundamentalist evangelicals in the process) but in practice these clubs are entirely secular philosophy discussions and don’t mention this higher power.

Skip the 1 stars, angry tweets, and negative remarks. They only serve to wear down your soul, add nothing to your life's purpose and make you question your mission. Nothing is as it seems to them. It's always a secretive clandestine plot by the dems to deceive the world. Trump fits the bill as the antichrist to a T. He is pure evil and most evangelicals are totally blind to this. It's amazing.

I was born and raised Catholic and as I grew up I withnessed how rules and beliefs varied depending on who it applied to, or effect or the goal you had to achieve that it could only be a lie solely to control and prevent people from being free thinkers and having free choice. So at 15 I turned my back to any church and tried to help and support those in need as best as I could and still do to this day. So if you try to impose your belief to me and all you can only be ultimately revealed as a fake, and a fraud.

Thank you for not demonizing secularists, Tim. How refreshing. Humanists are very curious by nature so I am not surprised at the reaction from secularists who read your book. I, too, am fascinated by Jesus and his teachings in the more historical sense. It always amazes me how so many religious blame non-believers for the decline in the church. For me it’s the scandals, the child abuse cower ups, the lack of women in power. That’s the reason. I guess it’s easier to blame institutional corruption on others. A lot of that going around. Christian Nationalism is not a religious movement. It’s a political one.
