1999 - excerpts of the turbulent relationship of Werner Herzog and Klaus Kinski, two perfectionist visionaries who, fuelled off their love and hate of each other, came to produce some of the finest cinematic works the world has ever seen.
Kinski died in 1991, aged 65.

Butterflies need salt. A sweating human is a good source of such salts and that's why that butterfly lands on Kinski. Let's not get too excited about it. It is not the case that mr. butterfly magically discovered Kinski's gentle soul to celebrate and reveal it to the world. Kinski is still an abusive asshole.

The irony is - nonwithstanding of Kinski's delusions of grandeur - Kinski needed Herzog much more than the other way round. Kinski made second and third rate movies throughout his career, his dramatic range was extremely limited, he played psychotic assholes... basically himself all the time. What body of work had he left without Herzog? Karl May movies, Edgar Wallace movies, Spaghetti western... playing the same supporting character ad nauseam.

Werner Herzog was the only one who could somehow handle Klaus Kinski (at least dared to try). The films they made together are classic & helped Kinski to develop his full potential as an actor. Without Herzog, he would have probably continued making terrible b-movies (as he had been doing for years) and fallen into oblivion. They were both totally crazy, and the shooting must have been extremely nerve-wrecking for both & the entire crew. But now those excellent artistic films remain.

Kinski lived and acted as if he was a rock star. In fact his erratic behavior and violent outbursts remind me of Liam Gallagher, lol. And Herzog is Noel then. Crazy analogy, I know

Without these various personalities we come in contact with, we would learn nothing of others or ourselves. Kinski was at a local restaurant here, smoking just after the ordinance was passed. When told to put out his cigarette, he told them to F themselves, paid his bill, and left, lol. He was an eccentric living in a world that can be hard to tolerate. I think Mr. Herzog is one of the best.

Not redeem, but.... Without Herzog, Kinski would have remained a vile, unwanted, despicable man, shunned and reviled by those around him. Worthless and only a stain on society. Through the lens of Herzog, he was capable of great beauty and art, and made something worthwhile and timeless, from an otherwise worthless and despicable man. What is a life? Can we say his was a net positive? Probably not. But without a man who understood his twisted mind, Kinski would having never offered anything of value to the world. It is a story of finding a shred of beauty in the darkest places, that even an evil psychopath has some kind of genius to offer if cultivated.

When klaus played a crazy character, you know you got the real thing because, he was that crazy character in real life... I wish I could have found the book his daughter wrote about him.. caller Kindermund by Pola Kinski, but I could not find a place to buy it in English . Thats about the only item I have not read about him...Werner Herzog had to have a temperment of steel, and a stress level out of this world to work with Kinski for as long as they were in their working and private relationship... sorry Klaus is gone tho as that means no new works on film with Klaus in front of the camera and Warner behind the lens making magic....

At 3:30, Herzog talks about how Kinski's autobiography has a bunch of fake drama that he put in to sell books. This more than anything makes me wonder how much of the Kinski legend is just legend. I think a lot of that supposed outrageous behavior was little more than a publicity stunt; it made people want to see Kinski because they had heard that he was such a lunatic. Many of those behind the scene shots of Kinski throwing fits seem really staged.

Strong gut instinct tells me we have not seen the end of the character he plays in the Mandaloria episodes. In last episode he played in that I could see, of season one, he's unexpectedly shot and blown up in what is much like the blinking of ones eyes. I trust that character is to be in future starwars episodes and perhaps even movies; he did there have by his side what apparently seemed like one heck of a scientific doctor. He was no doupt a quality character and a welcome edition to the Mandalorian exerces.
