Sand hats are so amazing and versatile. Matt Garstka uses them in animals as leaders and still cuts through and sounds perfect. Matt halpern has used them in periphery, and I've basically seen drummers of all genres and styles play them and they fit in perfect no matter what. Meinl really nailed it with the sand hats and also the sand ride but I find the sand ride doesn't cut through as much as I would like, the bell is fine but crashing it alittle in a rock setting gets kinda drowned out but in the practice room the 22 inch sand ride, 22 inch extra dry medium ride, and the transition ride are prolly my 3 favorite rides of all time. For live I bust out the beastly serpents ride with that big cutting bell that sounds beautiful in a metal rock setting and has a good enough crash cause I picked out a lighter version and the crashability is great, and u can't go wrong with the 22 inch traditional medium ride. Has a pretty good bell and great crashability. But the sand hats hold their own in a loud setting and in a setting like this video. Props to Meinl and Benny for coming up with some amazing hats that are different than anything else other brands offer.

Bit random but... I've just put Evans Hydraulic clear on my 16" floor tom and put the batter head that replaced it on the bottom which is a G2 clear (not that used)... Surprisingly sustained and incredibly thunderous. It's like a mini open bass drum.
