i think about this a lot because i’m also a huge peart fan on top of being a fan of more modern drummers like this, matt garstka, etc. i think what you have to take into account with neil peart is that he was the CREATOR of many techniques and impacted the course of music (more specifically rock/prog). on top of that he was the writer and composer for all of rushes music which is insane by itself. also, the internet’s takeover of modern life put a rocket booster on the like general skill of people because it made information and resources so readily available. people like neil peart and steve gadd had to try a lot harder to find teachers and resources.

I play drums in a blues/rock band and I will never reach the stage where I am playing anything close to what is in this video, which is fine for a 54 year old. That said, I am a total sucker when any drummer throws in syncopated ride cymbal accents in the verse with the main pattern on the hihat. 00:51 is where I heard it. Half the community here just loves to gatekeep drummers. If i had a dollar for every time i read some dumb comment about how most metal drummers couldn't play a basic jazz bar, I'd be incredibly rich. Drum snobs are so obnoxious. For these people drums are black n' white, nuance is lost, and everything is a comparison. Funny enough, it's almost always people who just don't like the music, so they feel the need to tear down their fellow drummers. Over grown children, really. No body gets to this level without being able to learn/play a basic jazz shuffle. Most men it seem just need something to focus on so they can cope with their own lack of fame.

unpopular opinion: Blast beats are not heavy. Even guys at this skill level cant hit the snare hard enough for it to sound heavy. Every time he switches to quarter notes, it's much heavier.
