He always blows me away. I often think what his contemporaries must have made of him when he preached to them, although perhaps I am underestimating the average German medieval peasant...What a great human being and how petty the "Church"! "Heresy" indeed! I have yet to read what the Church actually thought heretical about his writings in any detail, though, and may not bother: his writings certainly awoke/awake "the Word" in my soul and the word is extremely ecumenical...

Yes indeed! This sermon in particular is amazing. I really need to do a video on the papal bull and the inquisition. You might be surprised at what happened there. Eckhart had a lot of wins in the decision. He wasn’t condemned by name and his theology generally is still considered orthodox. It seems to have been politically motivated and the council was able to get the political win without coming down too hard on one of their best thinkers.

Yes, I know the general outline. It would be sort of interesting to know the particular points of "theology" they disputed and why they thought they were "heretical". I've always had the impression that it was to do with his talking in an "adult" manner to the lay people, and, of course actually giving sermons in a vernacular language that they could actually understand directly rather than listening to Latin and having it "interpreted". It would be good if you did that video! @@goodtothinkwith
