The word play on "the buck starts here" on the desk was a bit ahead of its time as well. (Pres. Truman had this saying on his desk after he took office near the end of World War II). This song was obviously written more for Americans in the 1980s then it was for Poles in the early 1940s. ;)

I laughed at this movie years ago... At first my attitude was: sure, why not, make fun of any controversial topic. Then I thought about how much harm Hitler has done. And then asked myself: Does anyone have the moral right to portray a DEMONIC being (an incarnation of evil, who has caused So Much Suffering) as a funny character? For those belonging to future generations who will only see this: Does anyone have the moral right to imprint this beast in their memory as a funny character? I think he should be known for what he really was and for the inimaginable suffering he has inflicted. Today I don’t think like I used to think years ago, that we have the right to reset that harsh truth and add fun to it...

Mel brooks tries to heal through humour by portraying hitler as a Buffon whenever he appears in a production, similar to war propaganda. Other artists interpret differently, survivors, their children, and those who fought the nazis all coped in different ways
