Cross that with Scottish tweed and that's probably where kilts came from. And it likely that some variation of a kilt was worn long before the 1600's. Just an ancient version.

Gibson does have a small percentage of Scottish blood, and Gibson is a Sept of the Buchanan clan, which he is wearing their hunting tartan here. Irish descendancy is still Gaelic descendency, just like the highland scots, so they are very closely related.
