How was he even remotely close to being a great father ? He had very restrained relationship with his daughter. He didn't even realize he had no food in the house for his daughter to eat. He was constantly focused on getting laid instead of actually being there for his daughter. the prom dress thing was just bribery as she was upset with him. He wasn't a very nice father at all - theres a reason why her friends were even hostile towards him at the start. They were fooled by his cheap words but you can see the daughter is very skeptical and doesn't buy his words and a little later in the movie she calls him out saying he hadn't bothered to have a relationship with her in 15 years, so she wasn't interested in him randomly deciding he was going to play the parent role.

The great nightmare of understanding peoples thoughts desires and inner workings is that no matter how much you see or hear or understand you can't help them or change them for the better because its all in their heads. So understanding them isn't helpful to them nor to yourself instead its better to just listen give the best advice possible and leave the rest to them you actually don't need to understand much just what they say in the immediate and often they're predictable enough that you can summarise from there. And that goes for either sex we're all pretty damn similarly flawed and our issues are nowhere near as complex as we lead ourselves to believe and most of our issues as people can be resolved with simple pathology and actions taken in our daily lives such as exercise, socialising eating better, getting a hobby so on so forth.
