This movie had no business being as emotional as it turned out to be. Really surprised me at how well they balanced the raunchy humor with the sensitive drama. @MagicCarpetRideShareProject Very true, but that's also part of what makes her work here impressive. When someone makes it big they get to a point where they don't have to try so much anymore. (e.g. later X-Men movies.) And then you see this kind of performance and you go "Oh, right!" She was killing it 15 years ago and still has it.

Minor Spoiler: This is by far my favorite scene from the entire movie. He is such a great musician but too shy, he HAS to play something and he plays the song from when they first met... the song gets you right in the feels, and then the camera zooming in on Maddie specially when he sings "Oh here she comes...watch out boy she'll chew you up" and she is trying to hide how she's feeling, and also afraid that she is going to break this amazing man's heart... Something really sad but etheral beautiful about this scene.
@biayumol4271
@biayumol4271 Жыл бұрын
Don't forget how she's wearing pink, which is the color of the dress she wore when she tried to seduce him in the dog shelter and was acting like a predator. She's stuck in the past, unable to grow up but this young man who's matured so much has woken her up to what she truly has become. Then... as the song ends, another girl walks into the scene wearing a floral dress, which mirrors the floral blouse Maddie wore in the beach date. During the beach date, they were having a convo about whether Maddie would've liked Percy if they were in highschool together. Yet, as she is having her "prom" with Percy, the girl that she once was (young and popular) walks right in and makes her feel insecure for no longer being her.

@@biayumol4271 That's really insightful. I was so confused by Maddie's reaction to Natalie. Like Maddie's clearly stunned by the song and upset at the idea of being a "maneater," but positive attention from a woman his own age seems like it's going to make him less emotionally invested in Maddie and thus less vulnerable to being hurt by her. So you'd think Maddie should be all for it. Also, I feel like Percy being able to get this attention from someone like Natalie and have a positive, natural interaction with her would be "Mission Accomplished" as far as Percy's parents are concerned. I know Maddie has mainly interpreted her job as just to take Percy's virginity, but I think a big part of the assignment was to get him to open up and socialize normally. So then it's like "Wait, is Maddie actually romantically interested in Percy now?" But that doesn't seem accurate. Or she views Natalie as an obstacle getting in the way of Maddie having sex with Percy, taking the car and being done with the whole thing, but that doesn't jibe with "Maneater" hitting her so hard.
@biayumol4271
@biayumol4271 11 ай бұрын
@@paulroys5019 Rather than just jealousy for taking Percy away, I've always viewed it as envy. It's the envy of a girl who hasn't moved on. To her, seeing Natalie was challenging another popular kid in highschool. Whatever guilt she felt was suddenly pushed away when she sees Natalie. She knows what she is but she forgets at that moment. Since the beginning of the movie, they've consistently tried to mirror Maddie to the younger characters in the movie. She may be in her 30s but mentally she hasn't aged much. One instance is during the beginning montage where they showcase both Maddie and Percy. Maddie's shot are a bit farther away from her face and have more raw sounds. Percy's shots are mostly close to his face and with music. By the latter part of the movie, they do the montage again but this time both have the background music playing. It shows how contained they are now at this point. The same goes with Natalie and the floral dress thing. Also, I'm just speaking from what I learned from analyzing movies in our film class lol. I had fun analyzing this movie because despite being a comedy, they still out effort in the cinematography.
@paulroys5019
@paulroys5019 11 ай бұрын
@@biayumol4271 That makes a lot of sense. Like Maddie's interaction with Natalie is all about... Maddie and Natalie. For that minute she just kind of sees Percy as an object that they're competing over. And then once Natalie leaves and Percy brings up the future, she moves to "Oh man, how do I not hurt this sweet kid (but still get the car)?"

Classic comedies are dead. This is the new formula. Comedy 2.0, if you will. The Leftovers follows the same pattern and it’s amazing. The stupid-style comedies have migrated into superheroes movies, so they had to recreate it from scratch.

There's a detail about this scene that for me personally made it even more special and I'd like to share it. As the song is presented before while they both have their first date at the pub. It's shown that he doesn't understand the real meaning of the lyrics as he describes it as a scary song because he understood the lyrics literally. In the same way and regardless of her comment about '''her not thinking thats the real meaning of it''' he plays the song in this scene still not understanding the lyrics. As he doesn't understands what's she doing with him. She doesn't only feels touched by his song choice and his playing. But also by the fact she knows he doesn't still gets neither the lyrics , neither what's going on really between them. Adding an special touch to it.

This scene in this amazing movie is so good because the acting and writing is incredibly complex full of peaks and valleys. We may think that sitting in that chair fawning over your date while he plays the piano would be easy but not the way Jennifer does it. No the does something special. She understands subtly and there is no doubt we feel what her character is feeling. We fall in love with him as she does. Then with perfect comedic timing (yes that's also with the directing and editing) the interaction with the other girl is just masterfully crafted. We learn about the characters, we learn about what they want and are disappointed as he is when he gets up to leave, We are emotional because the actors are not playing, they are feeling for real and it helps the script is so well written. I can go on and on about how this scene is a master class in filmmaking. It should be studied, it has it's place as really amazing work and it is without a doubt incurabl

He plays "Maneater" to her like he thinks of her as predatory. Then he doesn't introduce her to his friend from school like he is ashamed for others to know her through him. Hurtful. And he doesn't realize it. She may deserve some of it, but it is still hurtful.

Maddie did not deserve to be mistreated. At this point in the film, there was no reason for Percy to feel hostility toward her. So I don't think he intended to convey that he thinks of her as a predator. But even though it wasn't intentional, hearing these words from his mouth was devastating to her. It may have been the first time she was able to see their relationship through HIS eyes and sense it from his perspective. And because her sense of conscience had been awakened during this relationship, she was suddenly overwhelmed with guilt and shame.

Not to invalidate your well thought out analysis, but I think you may be digging a little too deep. I think he played it for her because he was trying to be romantic, since it was playing during their first date. That being said, that line when he says it's like she's trying to eat him definitely supports what you're getting at.

I also think he wasn't trying to be mean or hurtful, he totally expressed interest in seeing her during weekends while in college but she totally cooled him off on that idea and he felt hurt. He genuinely has feelings for her and her him but she cannot confront it.

@@adamatherton8562 Indeed, very well said! I wonder how many other movies have been reverse engineered from the premise for a single scene. I think Mike Judge once said that the entire plot of Idiocracy was born out of his desire to shoot the cold open!

@@AngelArm1110 I hadn't heard that; about the plot of "Idiocracy" but of course it makes sense that such things must happen now and again - a kind of "aha" moment in the mind of a creative person, which shows how original ideas are born.
