As an Aussie watching this in 2023. Love love love hearing Mel with (most of) his aussie accent intact.

He was born in NY, he didn't move to Australia until 1968, I sort of feel like the accent was a put on back then because it is what made him seem exotic and interesting early in his career...especially considering how he has mostly dropped it now.

The ironic thing is when his parents moved to Australia when Mel was 12 he was actually picked on by his classmates because he didnt have an Aussie accent because he was born in New York and raised the first 12 years of his life in the US. So he developed his Aussie accent and used it very early in his career until the late 80's early 90's. Some people I know think Mel was an actual Australian by birth who lost his accent upon moving to America but Mel is as American as apple pie.

An Australian accent is something you can acquire by just living there, but it takes longer to get rid of when you leave Australia.
@karenseery5064 Жыл бұрын
It’s not easy to acquire a realistic Australian accent in adulthood, but Mel slipped into his as a child, so he had that advantage. He really nailed it. Most of us thought he was as Aussie as we were.

@@karenseery5064 In 1999, I played a round of golf with two locals north of Sydney. At the 17th hole, both of them came to me and asked where I was from. I told them Philadelphia and they laughed uncontrollably thinking I was an Aussie for over 3 hours. You do pick up the accent.
