Mel64D , understandable. Do appreciate your videos. The investment in tools and a kit is quite costly now, out of reach for most of us? Still enjoying this, do what you can within your limits and we’ll be here watching!

@@Mel64d do you screw the barrel in then drill and pin? I'm also curious as to how you headspace this barrel
@Mel64d4 жыл бұрын
@@nathanbutler8240 No pinning the barrel after setting head space. The barrel is torqued to "x" foot pounds. The head spacing is done by setting the bolt and gauge where you want it just before the final torque. Torquing the barrel will rotate it slightly, so timing the head space is critical.

Mel, thank you for your videos. You have inspired me to start building myself. I have a question... I bought a Romi kit and I was going to use a Polish cold hammer forged barrel... Looks like the trunnion is oversized slightly and I get a slip fit vs an interference fit. Would you knurl the barrel or I have seen AK builder has some oversized journal barrels? Have you or any of your viewers had experience with the the AK builder chrome lined barrels? I have polish AK with that cold hammer barrel and man it shoots good, I could always use it for a different build but this is a nice Romi kit and want to see how it shoots with the barrel just hesitant to try knurling.
@Mel64d4 жыл бұрын
Thank you for watching my videos. First, have you measured the journal and trunnion diameters? If not, you really need to. This will let you know if you should knurl the journal or not. If the diameter needs more growth than knurling can allow (knurl will raise the surface a few thousands of an inch typically) then you will need to use the other barrel. If your measurements do allow you to knurl, then only knurl the area that makes contact with the inside of the trunnion. If you knurl the entire journal it will be visible every time you pop off the dust cover and you will most likely not be happy with it down the road. If you choose the ak-builder barrel that is over sized, how much over sized is it compared to your barrels journal.....again you will need to be able to accurately measure the diameters. Calipers are not really a good way to measure for interference fitments. Most get "lucky" with measurements from calipers and are able to press everything without bending/damaging anything.
@richriemer14 жыл бұрын
@@Mel64d thanks for the response and advice at his point I am using calipers and my barrel journal is .908 and from what I can tell the trunnion is running about .9085, again with several caliper measurements. It fits and comes out of the trunnion with some minimal force by hand. Once I move it up close to head space the barrel needs to be lightly tapped out with a mallet.
@richriemer14 жыл бұрын
Also, the AK builder barrel I was looking at is .910. What would be a good tool to measure the diameter outside of calipers?
@Mel64d4 жыл бұрын
@@richriemer1 Micrometers are for precision measurements. From what you're telling me about the fitment of the barrel now, I say knurl it and press. Make good and sure that the barrel is straight up and down in alignment with the press ram. Go slow. The barrel should move downward into the trunnion with each and every pull of the handle. Seeing as the barrel is removable by hand, you can mark the are where Not to knurl, i.e. the section (chamber area) inside of the gun.
@richriemer14 жыл бұрын
@@Mel64d thank you again for the advice. those measurement I gave you are with a digitally micrometer. Doh. I will try the knurling on the polish barrel. Enjoying the process so far. There is just something exciting about taking an old demilled piece and giving it life again. I have the head space gauges and most of the tools/jigs now. I know I can use a drill press but I am saving up for a decent milling machine. My experience comes from AR building and AK modifying. Definitely, seeing how different building the AK side is but I think it is something I am willing and want to try. Your vids really helped me overcome the fear. What took me over the edge to finally do this is your PSL video. Thank you for time and effort to put those together and share it!

Hey, Glade to see a new video... I always check you out when I see you in my timeline... Question, what is your opinion on longevity of the WBP parts you got awhile back, are they still good to go??
@Mel64d4 жыл бұрын
I have built the kit and shot it. Not many rounds threw it honestly though. But the parts seem good to go. Others that have built with the WBP kits haven't (to my knowledge) had any real problems. Most of my rifles get built and only shot to verify point of aim point of impact. Then they just sit in the safe. I do have some that have many thousands of rounds threw them, but most just get a mag or two.
