When I was still a little kid, I lived in a remote city in the northern tip of China. At that time, I enjoyed reading about the wonderful adventure of Marco Polo so much. It was an old booklet that belonged to my grandma, published just after the cultural revolution. Now I am thousands of kilometers away from my hometown, but this video somehow brings back some precious memories from there. Thank you for making the video.

This was so interesting! I recently learned about the Silk Road and how Jewish communities formed along it, all the way to China. It was fascinating.

The Silk Road really deserves its own video, but I'm a bit overwhelmed with how many interesting stories there are to it. It's a fascinating piece of history! Thank you for your comment, Jak :)

Oooo as a South Korean, the European perspective and written records that remain today around the views of “Asia” - very fascinating to me! I lived across 4 continents before the age of 26 yrs old and alllll of this history and languages and cultures just hit allll the right spots!!! I was born in South Korea, immigrated to Canada with my parents as a child, I then went o Kenya to volunteer and then went to Switzerland for school and then came back home to Canada December 2017!!! Thank you so much for making such lovely and informative videos ❤️

Wow, that is an impressive background! I'm in awe. And yess, seeing the view from "outside" and how things that seem completely obvious get filtered through different worldviews and knowledge can be fascinating and a really rewarding experience - if the circumstances are right, obviously. Thank you for your lovely comments!

I was reading recently about the legend of Prester John, he was thought to be a Christian priest-king who ruled a Christian Kingdom in Asia. The thought was he was a descendant of one of the magi or a long lost Nestorian Christian. The crusader kingdom in Jerusalem used the legend to urge Europe to send more troops during the fifth crusade saying that Predator John’s son is waiting with his armies to help etc
@MelangeASMR3 жыл бұрын
Thank you for mentioning that! I saw a mention of him in passing, but didn't have time to look up more info. I'm just seeing now that he's quite a common figure in US pop culture!

You seem to also have a great interest in 13th /14th century times. I'm fascinated with this era of warfare as well, particularly Vlad Tepes. Would you ever consider doing an episode on an Austrian warrior or King that your nation admires? Learning his life and bravery...this would be awesome. Similar to how Italy feels about Ceasar or France about Napoleon, Romania about Vlad and so on. You get the idea? 😀😀😀 Consider!! Hehe
@MelangeASMR3 жыл бұрын
Yes, it's a fascinating time, right? Thank you for the suggestion! I'll probably do a video on Napoleon (I'm currently trying to find some good material for it) and one on the 15th/16th cent. Habsburgs, but I can't really think of a person that would fit this specific narrative 😅 Maybe someone will spring to mind eventually!

Amazing journey for now let alone those times. I would not have liked going on those ships out of Hormus either. So they choose land travel through Iran over these rather daunting 300 metre high sand dunes. Then contend with what looks like weaving their way through the valleys of the Hindu Kush mountains. Did not realize the Hindu Kush pretty much avoids contending with the Himalaya's as you come out on the other side of them. That northern route looks easier but colder probably. No matter which route the big worry would be the threat of getting attacked along the way. Surprised me that Beijing was founded by the Mongols. Fascinating. Thanks Melange.
@MelangeASMR3 жыл бұрын
Hey, I'm happy you enjoyed this one! I can't imagine what this journey would have been like and I wish I had found a little more info on how they communicated along the way. Where there interpreters, did they have a lingua franca that they could use for certain areas, did Niccolò and Matteo learn Turcic languages on their previous trip, did people along the Silk Road have a certain ease in communicating with travellers with little common vocabulary...? But then I also had no idea there was an exchange of letters between the Pope and the Khan, so the 13th century in general is just a lot larger and stranger than I had imagined haha. ( I guess that goes for most times, really...)
