I thought it was more than appropriate! Which is more than I can say about the black pant suits that some other " first ladies " wore. I'm old school & I don't like female pant suits; I think in formal / business/ social gatherings, ladies should wear dresses; Cowgirls in blue jeans at a rodeo are fine & ladies working outdoors in pants are ok, but polyester leisure suits went out with the 1980'S!

Melania is always beautifully dressed for every occasion and, she wore grey which is very respectful. Personally, as a lady, I would never wear pants to a Memorial Service, and I would likely have worn a black hat and gloves as well. Customs and times change depending upon where one is, but good taste, fine quality and classic styling are always acceptable.

In Thailand, where I lived the past 10 years, all sorts of somber colors - black, white, grey, brown, and dark blue - are worn and generally acceptable at funerals - though black dress was enforced during the mourning period for King Bhumibol Adulyadej in 2016-17. (Not just one day, but for everyone going to the mourning and to every royal or formal event in his memory that year - some people in Bangkok wore it every day, though not as much in Chiang Mai where I lived! In Sri Lanka, where I lived in 2000-2010, white is the most common dress at funerals, and anyone entering a Buddhist temple for ceremonies must wear this color - everyday just visiting a temple, any somber or light color is acceptable. The history of black in Western culture goes back to Victorian times, when many people, especially ladies whose husbands or other close relatives had died, wore "mourning" black dress for a full year after the death. But this is why it was also copied in Thailand, where previously the traditional funeral dress had been white as in other Buddhist countries - the Thai monarchy copied many European customs at the time and integrated them into Thai society. So anyway all this information shows that funeral colors vary among cultures and historical times, and the main idea and intent is to be somber and serious - red or other bright colors would be a no-no, but I don't see anything wrong with grey. I guess it was cold there, so that's why she couldn't take off her coat?
