Also , there is a rare type that can be on your nail. My Dad had a black spot on his nail and he already had regular checks at the dermatologist every 6 months due to both parents having melanoma and having basal cell removed on face several times. The dermatologist told him it was fine and didn’t have it biopsied. It turned out to be melanoma and turned into stage 4 because it was never removed or checked. He is doing well now on immunotherapy but the cancer is still in his spine but it’s stabilized and so far not spreading. So if a dermatologist tells you a black or dark spot on your nail is ok, you might want to get a second opinion.

For those of you saying you have to wait months, see your general practitioner first. Sometimes they can even biopsy it for you, or send you to another specialist who can see you much sooner. Specialists are more likely to see you sooner if another doctor thinks your mole looks suspicious and should be looked at.

@@Beatles0223 My point is, if I make the appointment with a Derm myself, they tell me I have to wait many months to a year or to go to my GP first (if it seems urgent) anyways. When I go to my GP first, I get an appointment within a couple of weeks with a specialist versus many months. I know it sucks to go to two doctors, but at least it helps some people see a specialist faster.

Don’t give up on being seen. One family member ended up with one type of of sarcoma first and then Pleomorphic Dermal Sarcoma. Surgery, skin grafts and lymph node removal. Also ensure that any sores inside your mouth are looked at asap as well. Another family member had oral cancer, ended up losing half of top jaw, teeth and roof of mouth,as well as most of cheek back to ear and down to jawline. In the long after attempting treatment more than once he lost his life to it. Go to your Dr.

For folks who either don't have insurance or have to wait for ages to see a dermatologist...I mean first off, waiting a few extra months is not likely to make a difference. Just make that appointment ASAP. Typically, once you're in the system, it's MUCH quicker to get in again. But back to my original point: keep an eye out for your local medical centers to be doing free screening days. My hospital just had one last month. It ran from 5:30 to 7pm, no insurance, no payment, you literally go in and a dermatologist will look you over from head to foot. Now, if they find something suspicious, then yes you have to make an appointment. But otherwise you get the peace of mind that all your moles and skin spots have been looked at, OR you now know you need to get treatment asap. And at least that part was free.

My first deployment in Iraq I had to be the driver as the lowest ranking lol. I noticed this spot on my left cheekbone. It was getting larger and it was darkening. I immediately went to a dermatologist coming back. After the biopsy they said it was a wart! I was like wtf. It was flat and it didn't look like one to me. They gave me nothing for it so I put straight ACV on that hoe with a qtip. It burned the first few times then it crusted off. No more ugly wart. Guess it was better than being melanoma. I thought I'd gotten melanoma from constantly driving in Iraq.
