I knew two people who had melanoma. Both had dark hair, were white, did not have light skin. They did not have many moles on their bodies. Both were in their 40s. They did not sun bathe a lot. One died from the disease. The other was caught early and has survived now for 6 years. So you don't have to have light hair or skin. Also, you say wear a hot and long sleeve shirt and pants in the sun. Well, not when it is 90 and humid!

I have a question if someone could help me, as a med student is knowing surface level and being able to tell something is off in the skin to refer to the oncologist is what i am supposed to do, or am i actually supposed to know how to treat and know every condition there is in dermatology and their treatment plans i mean if i did the latter whats the purpose of the oncologist, so my question is how to know when you are too deep in a topic?
@ArushiBaliyan9 ай бұрын
I, as a med student myself, have been told by doctors that I'm supposed to try and suspect something if it seems odd but never establish a diagnosis. I should know about the common conditions, their presentation, treatment and management. But, I don't need to know everything. And believe it or not we just know a fraction of what an oncologist knows even if we read about all the possible conditions. So I guess it's better to have some surface level knowledge about most of the conditions. What is the purpose of the oncologist then as you asked, it is that they can actually make the final differential based on their expertise and they are the ones who actually know how everything works. We as med students should know better than what a normal person would know if they read an article but even if we try to, it is really difficult to learn as much as the experts do. So I try to learn as much as I feel like is enough. 😅

Can anyone help? Appreciate I would be best placed to see a dermatologist/ GP which I am trying to do here in the UK. A new mole appeared on my ankle around 16 to 17 months ago. I have a lot of moles, however no moles near my feet other than the one that appeared. Over the last four to six months I have been experiencing pain in my left ankle where the new mole appeared, followed by pain in my hip and collarbone. This pain can be intermittent but can be very painful a prolonged period of time (several weeks in fact). I have been feeling very tired. The new mole is bigger than the other moles that I have, however is symmetrical in shape. Can anyone help with any information and/or share their own experience? Many thanks

it's does not have to be pigmented in children where it can be amelanotic. don't teach such an important subject with critical mistakes!
@theywalkinguptoyouand40607 жыл бұрын
No, that is not a critical mistake, Amelanotic melanoma is extremely rare. His videos are more designed for med students and undergrads. No med student would be in a situation where they would end up diagnosing amelanocytic melanoma. In fact, there is no reason to teach such a thing to primary providers because how could they use that info? if you teach students that a melanoma can be pigmented and can be not pigmented, that will only confuse them. (If you question that, I'm a dermatologist btw, I just don't feel the need to make "Doc" a part of my username)
@billbradleymusic4 жыл бұрын
It doesn't have to be pigmented in adults. An obvious student, probably making a buck from lazy compadres.
