I have pretty bad sleep disturbances and my body clock goes out quite often because of mental illness. In Australia you need a prescription to get melatonin. I got a prescription for it late last year for 2mg modified release tablets. It has made a huge difference in my life. I couldn't get in to see my doctor for another script for about 2-3 months so I had to make them last. I got a new prescription last week and I'm back to sleeping well again. It is such a relief!

Hey doc, I’m a college student and I been sleeping at around 1am every night. Do you think taking melatonin is good to get my sleep schedule back on track?
@AndrewKimMD4 жыл бұрын
Before that, I’d look at your daily habits, and take an honest look in the mirror and check if you are practicing good sleep hygiene habits. Are you limiting caffeine in the evenings? Are you not procrastinating too much to cram for exams to keep you up at night? Are you exercising too late? Watching your phone in bed? Etc. for me, cutting back on caffeine, late night workouts and eating late at night were the toughest things to change but it made it easier to fall asleep at night.

I don't think anyone has definitive answers on that. For the time being, most physicians recommend this be used short term as needed. Meaning weeks to months at a time, and then hoping your sleep cycles and circadian rhythm has regulated by then. Everyone's body and brain is so different, it always comes down to a risk/benefit ratio. Do the short & long terms benefits outweigh the risks is what you always need to ask yourself. Do I have patients who take it regularly for years? Sure, I do, and they're fine. But, whenever possible, i try to have them limit it if they can, because even over the counter meds have side effects as well. Sorry there isn't a crystal clear answer, everyone's body and tolerance for side effects is different.

Some indications are it may make you live longer and keep your mind sharper. Supplementing with substances found naturally in the body but fading away as we get older makes loads of sense. Don't buy into the dumb hesitancy doctors seem to be taught about vitamins and such. That's a drug company induced blind spot. Listen to your body. And don't be afraid to supplement in later years. Drug companies don't like this because it reduces their chances to sell you poisonous drugs.

Honestly, in general, i recommend simple melatonin supplements, if one is going to try it out, that don't have many other drugs mixed in. You have to read the labels carefully, sometimes a manufacturer will call something a "melatonin supplement", but it might also contain an antihistamine or other supplements. In terms of brand, nothing fancy or expensive is needed, I would stick with major, well established brands like Nature Made. Not that I think they have some superior version, but, given that they are a larger company.... that also means they have a lot more to lose, if they were to skimp on quality control since millions of people use their supplements.

Everyone's different. Listen to your body carefully any time you put something new into it. Melatonin has been shown to be safe at much higher levels than the doses your drug store sells. Jeff T. Bowles suggests 100mg is a good dose for increased longevity and healthfulness. There are reports of melatonin supplements with 1000 times the labeled dose being sold by mistake, and taken by thousands of people with no lasting ill effects. We need melatonin. Our bodies make less and less as we get older. Recent science suggests that hormonal fall-off is evolution's way of getting rid of old organisms and making room for younger ones. Perhaps we shouldn't be going against nature. Each person can make their own choice. Living longer and healthier sounds kind of like a winner to me.

@AndrewKimMD4 жыл бұрын
There won’t be any direct drug-drug interaction per se. but the risk would be sedation/drowsiness or a possible hangover effect in the morning. It’s strange, but Zoloft for some people will cause insomnia, for others it’s will cause grogginess/drowsiness, everyone is different. If you happen to be someone that gets drowsy from it, and then you take something like melatonin that can also make you drowsy, some people will report having grogginess that spills over into the next day.

I’ve been really anxious about my health lately (one thing or another all the time) and would like to know if my melatonin use could have possibly resulted in permanent damage to the brain/ receptors or should stopping the use of melatonin allow everything to return to normal? There is way too little science for melatonin. But indications so far seem to be that supplementing does not effect the body's production or response to melatonin. Other than adjusting for the cascade of other substances it spawns, etc. Jeff T. Bowles suggests in his books that large doses of melatonin probably increase longevity and reduce susceptibility to Alzheimers. The available science seems to suggest resulting increases of other important hormones, like progesterone and others.

If you mean, you switched from taking two 5mg tablets, and then changed to a single 10mg tablet. In that situation, sometimes simply changing the type of tablet or changing brands can be causing an issue. The over the counter medication industry is very poorly regulated. One brand’s version of melatonin by contains very different concentrations of melatonin than another, even if you buy the same dose. If I misunderstood, and you’re saying that going from 5mg to 10mg is causing the headaches, then yes, possibly the dose is too high, and you might need to consider a lower dose.

I have been taking melatonin for the past week because my sleep schedule was out of balance and I couldn’t fall asleep until the sun came up. I am now able to sleep at night centred around a healthy sleep schedule. I find the next morning I’m groggy and slow, overall feel like I’m ready for a nap at any point during the day. Should I try decreasing my dosage ? Currently taking 5mg, and I am 23 years old 6ft 190 lbs.

I can't give direct medical advice. But, in general, some adults even find 1mg to 3mg of melatonin sufficient. And if your sleep cycle has been regulated, I generally tell patients to take a break from their melatonin to see if their circadian rhythm/sleep cycle continues to stay in a good place on its own without melatonin.

Then maybe you need to up the dose
@markallen3813 жыл бұрын
Your dosage is the likely problem. I used to wake up groggy, is that what you mean? I was taking a 5mg melatonin. I reduced the dosage to 1mg and I was waking up without drowsiness and very refreshed. There are a lot of different pill sizes. I've seen it in 1mg, 2mg, 3mg, 5mg,6mg and 10mg. there may be more. Always start out with the low dose first. I take my pill 1 hour before bedtime.
@healing-vibe-tribe3 жыл бұрын
@@markallen381 Depends what your goal is. I'm experimenting with serious mega dosing for healing. In my searching, I find many reporting the lower doses problematic for sleep but say they've done well once they upped their doses.

My experience with 3mg is that it does work right away. Not by knocking me out or sedating me. It just makes me feel more tired and sort of in more darkness. If due to some disturbance I don't sleep right away and have to goto sleep an hour or two later I have to take another pill.

Dr. Kim you mention melatonin not being regulated by the FDA. Last time I checked only one to 3% of medication‘s are tested by the FDA. Most pharmaceutical companies submit in-house testing. So the fact that the FDA has not put their stamp of approval on over-the-counter melatonin should not matter. Just my humble opinion doctor.
@AndrewKimMD2 жыл бұрын
Matters quite a bit actually. I’ve worked in clinical trials for over 6 years. Anyone can say they’ve done “in house” testing. Most diet pills and things at GNC claim that. While technically true they’ve done testing, often with no rigor. The FDA is far from perfect and flawed, but the standards and rigor of passing FDA phase 3 clinical trials is a far far higher bar than anyone who basically is saying “just trust us” from some tiny Non-controlled trial.

thats not what melatonin does. It signals to your body its dark, and that its sleep time. What gives you a deep sleep is your sleep pressure.
@richardf9113 жыл бұрын
@@ryantammul5961 I see this idea expressed from time to time and I'm not sure. If you take a sublingual melatonin (melts under the tongue) you may find that it really makes you sleepy quickly. Mostly because it goes more directly into your bloodstream. Swallowing melatonin may have other useful effects. So much we don't know yet.

Melatonin did not work for me at all. If you have anxiety with your pre-sleep you might fall asleep for 2 hours and wake up to find out you can’t fall back to sleep. That’s what it did to me anyway.

I take 300 mg a night, I have watched a few videos on melatonin. I take it for 2 reasons, It fights cancer & metastasis, which I had. Now I am staying on it to help my brain as I have the start of Alzheimer's. Eventually I'll lower it but it will always be at least 60 mg. I beat the cancer without chemo, surgery, radiation or $15,500 a month hormone blockers.

Which is safe, melatonin or benzodiazapine
@hassanm.hassan47993 жыл бұрын
Benzodiazapine meds like Ativan or Valium can be dangerous in that they are addictive. After a few months of taking Ativan for anxiety, which it did help at first, I ended up with crushing anxiety when i stopped using the Ativan. I've been using melatonin for years on and off without any serious side effects like that. Not a doctor but a long time patient of the mental health system.
