A note to both of you. I am a relatively healthy 91 yr old male. I started taking Melatonin supliments at about age 45. I have taken 1/2 miligram daily simply because it is not possible to get 300 Microgram tablets which is what the body might generate itself during sleep. I am absolutely convinced that this regime of Melatonin has contributed to my continued good health.

I have been taking melatonin for 25 years. I started with 3mg, after a few years 5mg, then 10mg and now, at 67, I'm taking 30mg. At this age, the body's own melatonin production is only minimal. Apart from a broken arm and an inflamed appendix, I have never been ill since then. By the way, I haven't eaten any vegetables for a year. 80% carnivore and some fruit.

I work in a health food store, and my coworker had listened to a study that talked about melatonin being taken during the day. I have never like the effects of melatonin as it makes me groggy the next day. So my coworkers and I took it around 1 o'clock in the afternoon. We work in an office with no windows. We noticed an elevation in mood, calm and relaxed during stressful issues going on, plus the best sleep we had experienced in a long time.

As a four times cancer survivor I am guarded when it comes to taking melatonin. I became aware that it actually sped up my cancer process, that particular cancer was receptor negative. I feel Melatonin has its place in lowering body inflammation, pain and in aiding sleep quality, but it aided my cancer cells to survive if not become more resilient, I believe the right dosage may be more important than we think, and should be calculated based on individual differences in metabolism and other biological data and health conditions past and present. Anyone with cancer should also be guarded on taking MSN, also quite beneficial, but if you have or have had cancer it can aid cancer progression/spread or re-ignition of a sneaky little dormant cell, just waiting in the wings for the right catalyst. People need to do their own research and take their individual differences into account before taking something they know little about. Monitor yourself closely when taking something, then pay close attention to what your body is telling you.

I had a Bichon that always got that hair loss in the winter. I live up north where she didn't get a lot of sun from December through March. It's called "idiopathic flank alopecia". Common in Bulldogs. When she would spend more time outside in the sunlight in the spring the hair would grow back. She didn't start up with the hair loss until she was close to ten years old. I didn't supplement her with anything as it didn't seem to bother her. It just looked weird, so I'd clip her down short and put a sweater on her.

I've been using melatonin for 20 years after following and still study the research by Prof Russel J Reiter, world renowned melatonin investigator and others. I started with 5 mg daily and gradually upped it over the years to 100mg and occasionally 1000mg. Melatonin is an amazing ancient molecule. It's key to understand that blue wavelength at night shuts down endogenous melatonin within 1.5 seconds. It is important to block blue light at night within 1 to 2 hours of bedtime from sources such as computers, cell phones, white light, and streetlights.

Been taking Melatonin since I was in my mid 30's, I'm now 66. I started out with the 3mg every night, it was a life saver for me because it would take me 2 hrs every night to fall asleep I would wake up around 2 am ( went to bed at around 10 or 11pm ) then it would be another 2 hrs or so until I finally would fall asleep again and it ALWAYS turned out that I would fall asleep and it seemed like right after I would fall asleep the alarm would go off. This happened every night & morning, if not for Melatonin I really have no idea what would have happened to me. But now I'm up to 20 to 30 mg's a night ( for the last 5 yrs ) plus an Ambient, I really have not experienced any side effects that I have read about. I have been tested for that sleep thing when you stop breathing, I don't stop breathing at night. At any rate I will be coming off that stuff and see what happens. If it has any effects on aging and your Mitochondria I don't feel it or see it in my physicals and labs.

I hope that you can interview Russel J. Reiter who has his name attached to over a thousand melatonin research papers and has written a textbook on melatonin. I take 60 to a 120 mg(not mcg) in divided doses daily,then cycle off it for awhile. I am 70 and melatonin at this dose enhances sleep quality - but not duration. The most profound effect is from the 30 mg I take when I awaken in the morning which provides a noticeable sense of enhanced well being which puzzles people who think of melatonin as a sleep hormone...but is consistent with Reiter's research showing that 95% of the melatonin in the body is produced in the mitochondria in the daytime in response to infrared light stimulation.

I have been using over a gram of pure melatonin topically with dmso for months. I have used up to 3.5 grams without any major side effects. Doses of 2-3 grams were as effective for me as otc cold/flu medications for dealing with symptoms. Melatonin exerts strong effect on thymus. I am aware doses of up to 6 grams being used via IV in conjunction with chemo. Also it's infrared light that induces higher natural production of melatonin. Sunlight is a stimulator of melatonin production along with other forms of light that have infrared spectrum in it like incandescent bulbs, bonfire, candle light, etc.

I have HBP and have been on medication for it for a few years. Recently my medication stopped working to control my blood pressure, and I would get readings as high as 195/116 even though taking the medication which controlled it for years. I am going through perimenopause though and noticed a strange thing about my BP the Diastolic pressure is staying high (87 - 116) even though the Systolic pressure is in normal range (120 - 140) I connected it to my hormonal changes, did a bit of research on the hypothalamus, pituitary and pineal glands and hormone regurgitation, and I realized that the high cortisol levels I was experiencing were probably because my body wasn't producing melatonin the way it should, so the cortisol levels never went down. This contributed to high blood sugar levels as well as excessive weight gain, and not only has my weight and blood sugar dropped, and sleep improved, but my diastolic blood pressure levels have been dropping into the 70s now and hoovering in the 80s. I'm still on the HBP meds, but am hoping to be able to get myself off of them in the near future.

What about the fact that the pineal gland is calcified in most adults and trace amounts of melatonin, if any, is produced by the gland? I wonder how the body is coping with this situation.
@Panazoniac

Only 5% of the body's melatonin is produced in the pineal gland. 95% of endogenous melatonin is produced by the mitochondria. Regardless, the body produces less and less with age. Either way, supplementation can be beneficial.

I have an English Bulldog that had the same issue. He had a vitamin D deficiency because we live in a very hot climate and he can't be outside for more than a few minutes at a time most of the year. English bulldogs have a hard time with cooling themselves because of there squished face. Anyway, much of the melatonin is converted into vitamin D so I started giving him a few mg at night before bed and it cleared up within a few months. It's worked for 3 years now. Also, my wife and I are dog trainers and we've had a few clients that we have recommended this treatment to. They have all had success with it. One had been told by the vet that they thought it might be from bacteria or yeast, but the medicines they prescribed never helped so we told them about the melatonin and that worked great

Years ago I read in the book "Melatonin Miracle" that in rat studies, they lived 1/3 longer on melatonin, so I decided to try it on our new Golden Retriever. The breed has an average lifespan of 10-12 years. Our girl is now 15 and going strong in spite of miraculously surviving a very serious accident a couple of years ago. All of her contemporary goldens that we knew passed away years ago. So the rat data is consistent with her results. Naturally my wife and I are on it too.

I am 68 and have taken Melatonin, Vitamin D³ and Biotean for more than 45 years now. I also take, over the last 5 years now, Zinc once a week. Why? I have found I always feel better, more relaxed. Today, I have better skin, nails and hair than most my age. My bones and joints are strong. I have Dietetic Type II issues. I have taken Metformin for probably the last 30 years. I personally think Melatonin also contributes to better cognitively. I feel sharper than most older folks my age orbolder, that I have met. Most people think I'm in my 50s. So, I contribute that to my regiment. As far as Covid, I refused to that that vaccine. I'm apposed to m-RNA manipulation as a way to attack a virus. The new idea of now putting m-RNA vaccines in food stock and plants has made me angry because it removes the choice from individuals on what they choose to put in their bodies.
