Michelle Payne's family story is inspiring. The next year, her brother-in-law won, while in 2017 we saw the remarkable Joseph O'Brien train the winner, while his father, perhaps the world's top trainer today, had the runner-up.

Can someone tell me why we applaud and congratulate the jockey? It's like drag racing sports cars and congratulating the driver, not the engineers or the mechanics.

Tully ... most of the post-race interview was the jockey expressing thanks to the trainers, owners, strapper, etc so your question is somewhat redundant.

Tully the jokey’s job is to give the horse the best opportunity to win, so getting them into a good position and knowing when to save energy etc... they don’t just sit there and hold on lol
