If you visit Melbourne make sure you take the train from the city to one of the outer suburbs- any suburb it doesn't matter. You are in for a real treat!!! You will never in your life forget the ride.

I've lived in Melbourne nearly all my life, I've never been assaulted or attacked and I've walked down dark empty alleyways in the heart of the city at 2am. IMHO Melbourne has more attractions/distractions than Sydney however Sydney's visual appeal on the waters edge is very high, if you can afford to live there that is. Sydney's more colourful with fashion, Melbourne tends to be very grey. Melbourne is renown for its restaurants and night life.

There's a lot of options in Melbourne, Sydney, and Brisbane, for work and housing and stuff. Perth is a nicer city to be in, but housing there is hell expensive I think. The Gold Coast is near Brisbane, and has really nice housing and stuff, and awesome place to be. Personally I think Darwin is the nicest, I'm there right now on holiday, but as a software engineer you might not find that much work there.

Sydney's also an expensive place to live. Otherwise there's little difference between them. Where you want to live in Melbourne on the otherhand depends on your intentions here and on your financil standing.

if you are a newcomer to Melbourne, aka, Crimeland here are some words of advice from the Victoria police commissioner and I quote "look as poor as you can...Don't display your iPods, don't display your valuable watch, don't display your valuable jewellery. Try to look as poor as you can to avoid being assaulted..." So if you are assaulted in Melbourne, and there's a pretty good chance you will be, it's really your fault for not looking poor.

Although I love Sydney and think it's a great place to visit, and live provided you can afford to live around the bay, I do think you're on the right track setting sights for Melbourne. Sydney can be a bit expensive sometimes. As for Melbourne suburbs, I would suggest maybe Brunswick, or similar/near. It's multicultural, connected to the tram network, and well known for it's indie scene. Basically, a good place to make a start. (Lickmylovepumpp is right, stay away from Frankston... it's a hole.)

Are you talking about size? A common misconception is the size of most US cities. WIth the exception of the massive ones (NY, LA, Chicago) most other world-famous US cities are closer to the population of Adelaide.

@bryanite What am I talking about? Hydrofoils. You are right that the world doesn't run on Hydrofoils. That's the problem Lady. The Habour was good but they had to get rid of the best part. The problem was that the habour was too piss weak for Hydrofoils. They barely got Foilborne apparently. That's why they should put Hydrofoils on Port Philip Bay.

The weather in Melbourne is random and unpredictable. Melbourne is far from having the best weather in Australia. Ya I have been to many cities around the world- Vancouver, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Denver, London, Taipei and others but melbourne is by far the least unattractive place. The suburbs are especially awful; there seems to be no originality whatsoever in the design of homes and neighborhoods. The houses all look like they were made from the same set of plans. This and badly kept yards makes for an extremely dreary, depressing place.
@qalxeero16 жыл бұрын
to Aussies who are posting anti-American messages here, just remember that without the United States, there wouldnt be Australia on the world map. Melbourne is a great city thats working hard to gain and American style image, which is attractive to all of us. But dont bash us.

if you have just moved to Melbourne from a third world country and you long for home, just take a ride on one the trains. From the view out the window- dilapidated buildings, rampant graffiti and vandalsim, rubbish everywhere,- to the trains themselves- dirty, slow, smelly, antiquated, unreliable and plagued with crime- you will be convinced you are in your third world homeland.

melbourne is a hole. All the suburbs look the same, ie, very run down with poorly kept homes and yards. And all the houses look the same- dreary red brick everywhere. It's a really ugly concrete and brick jungle with hardly any leafy neighborhoods. What a depressing place.

What an awful, crappy city Melbourne is! We visited the "Royal Botannic Garden"- what a big disappointment. Do they even know what a garden is? The museum is awful, Scienceworks is a joke and Crown Casino is bush league. How can anyone think this city is world class? The amount of grafitti and vandalism throughout the city is incredible. The suburbs are a sea of cookie cutter poorly maintained red brick houses with cars parked on the front grass and grafitti, vandalism and litter EVERYWHERE!!!
