Remember your USD $7 buys AUD $10 in Australia, and if you buy meat or other produce, we use kilograms which equal 2.2 pounds . Depends where you go in Melbourne, but you can get very good prices for cafe food, and we do not tip, and GST tax is already included in the prices of everything you buy.... So if you buy a meal for $10.00, thats all it will cost you...nothing else.

It costs a lot to eat in Australia for 4 reasons. 1. We pay a living wage. This is passed on to the cost of the goods. The cost of food is relative to our pay. 2. 95% of all our fresh produce is grown in Australia, but all over the country. Our country is the size of the US, but with only 25 million people. So transport costs are factored in. And less goods because of less population means higher prices. 3. Water. Weather. Fires. Drought. We don't have enough water. We are the driest continent on Earth, but growing food that is water thirsty. And we have regular droughts. We also get massive bush fires and cyclones all of which affect what grows or what dies. For example a few years ago a cyclone destroyed much of the banana crops. Bananas are usually cheap here, but they went as high as $14 per hand. If you saw someone eating a banana you teased them for being rich. 4. Food is seasonal here, so what is in season is cheap. What is not in season is expensive. So Australians mainly eat seasonally. Not many western countries eat like that any more. We do.
