All these years later, I find out there was an original version of this wonderful song. I love Soft Cell's version and I always thought they wrote this song! Melinda Marx' original is very Sixties! It's reminiscent of Petula Clark's "Downtown". Miss Marx is gorgeous and sings beautifully! I wonder how high her version charted. It's very interesting to know that Melinda's father was Comedian Groucho Marx!

Judy Street’s version is a classic Northern Soul tune, and is massively better than this.

How did I miss her in the 60's? She should have been a big star. I just love her style.
@AnimationSensei10 ай бұрын
@@MrBillTaylor She could have, indeed. But her heart really wasn't in it (you can even see it in this clip), and she just did a little singing and acting to please her father. After he died, Melinda hid herself from the public, and rarely allowed herself to be interviewed or photographed. Over the last 3 decades or so she's served as a mandolin player in a small church somewhere in California.

In the mold of early mid-sixties teen-fe-drama such as Leslie Gore, Melinda Marx, with her seemingly limitless talents delivers this over-wrought 'big' production number with pazazz. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE her dancing and she's one cute gal.

@mrmotown9531What do you mean, "original"? It was at least 3rd in line. Melinda Marx released the first and original, then Tina Mason. Judy Street's version is more a cover of Tina's version than Melinda's. Then Soft Cell covered it later.

Well, she wasn't all that thrilled with being a performer to begin with. It was her dad's idea, apparently. There was a point where she just put her foot down and walked away from it. Can't blame her...if your heart isn't in it, it isn't in it.
