Very helpful, thanks. If I use a ballpoint / stretch needle, will this stop the (straight stitch - top stitching) from 'popping' when the fabric is stretched around the neckline area please? x

The stretch needle won’t change the seam it just sews through a knit fabric better. There’s always some chance for popping with a straight stitch but with the banded technique and the straight stitch on top of the serger seam it’s quite secure and I haven’t had any seam breaks that way.
