Best "Mitch slap" I have seen in a while. Welcome to Pentatonix. To see how Mitch can sing this high, I recommend The Prayer next.

Mitch is phenomenal. He's a counter tenor which means his voice is in the stratosphere anyway but he brings his chest voice and head voice together and maintains pitch and control. I'm 69 years old and it's like nothing I've ever heard. His fans have a name for it. It's called being Mitch slapped.

One of the interesting tidbits about this arrangement is that Kirstin went a half step higher when she was singing the final chorus of Hallelujah than she did during her solo! Because the song was going to be on a Pentatonix Christmas album, they were all dressed in heavy clothes and coats for the "winter season". But the video was actually shot in the Mojave Desert in CA in the middle of summer, with temps about 100°F! It's a wonder no one ended up with heat stroke!

You are so right about the sky and the atmosphere in general. The video was filmed in the Mojave Desert near Barstow. The time of day was very deliberate. This video had to have been filmed in one take with various cameras on the ground and in the air mounted on drones. The reason I say all one take is the light, which is entirely natural. It was filmed in Magic Hour, a time of day that the French call L'Heurre Bleu. There is no way to create the effect artificially. The clarity and sharpness it gives film is indescribable yet unmissable. Your reaction to Mitch called a "Mitch Slap" his voice is amazing anyway, but never finer than here. You have the glorious, lush wall of sound at the end of the chorus, and then bang. Just Mitch with his otherworldly sound. When he gets to "Its a cold and it's a broken HALLELUJAH", your heart breaks. What adds more meaning is how he holds the first syllable, creating a syncopated phrase, where is is slightly off the beat but constantly tuning the chord.

I can’t count how many times I’ve listened to this song but it never fails to give me chills and uplift me. I really enjoyed your reaction. It’s so nice when someone ‘gets it’ down to their soul. Avi left the group on amicable terms for family reasons. Between Pentatronix, Voiceplay and the individual singers in both groups they’ve started a modern a cappella revolution.
@Valandar22 жыл бұрын
There's one thing Pentatonix can do I have never heard another acapella group match, and they do it both here, and even more profoundly in the "Imagine" cover: They can sing the exact same notes with identical articulation, so that all five singing a verse sounds like one, profound voice.
@daleb12792 жыл бұрын
Welcome to the wonderful world of a cappella music. Next on the journey should be Home Free, which if someone is cutting onions again, I'd suggest starting with How Great Thou Art and then move to their cover of Boys II Men End of the Road and remember....there are no instruments.

When Leonard Cohen wrote the song back in the 80s, it was about faith in life, not religious faith. This world is full of conflicts and full of things that cannot be reconciled. But there are moments when we can reconcile and embrace the whole mess, and that's what I mean by 'Hallelujah.' ~Leonard Cohen Many artists have put their own interpretations into the song. From sexual, biblical figures mentioned, Samsom/Delilah and King David/Bathsheba. To spiritual / religious. No matter how it is interpreted, it is a beautiful song. Pentatonix is my favorite cover, they are all around perfection!

Pentatonix doesn't do anything in their videos that they can't do live, sounding exactly the same. If you want to go back into the onion cutting room, react to The Prayer, Amazing Grace, and Mary Did You Know. If you want to hear them having fun react to Daft Punk, Cheerleader, Can't Hold Us, You're a Mean One Mr Grinch, Oh Come All Ye Faithful, and Sing. If you want to hear how phenomenal they are at blending their voices react to My Heart With You, Run to You, and Can You Feel the Love Tonight.
