A nico time cigarette in one hand, a thermos of coffee in the other, out the window the lights of the city you escaped to to forge your own life away from the world that seemed bent on annihilating itself with nukes. Your coffee's grown cold, yet this just brings a smirk to your face as your palm glows red, the incinerate plasmid you spliced such a handy little tool, those parasites could never have made such a marvel, only Rapture could allow such innovation. You've worked hard, reminding yourself that you should pick up a bottle of champagne for the celebration tonight, getting to your feet, you turn to a bust of Andrew Ryan, giving it a nod of the head and a tip of the hat before you head off.

You ever wonder, how think would that glass have to be at those depths? And moreso, what material? Ordinary glass wouldn't work for obvious reasons, reinforced glass or other transparent materials maybe, but it would need to be fabricable under the ocean as they became isolationists. I know fontaine smuggled a lot, so there must of some kind of import system available right? But they don't mention if materials and ores were manufactured on the surface and brought down other than the initial building of Rapture. And so I wonder if they had manufacturing in the city for building materials for repairs, they had to know expanding was a must over time, they had the rapture metro which was replaced by Bathysphere tech but manufacturing comes from somewhere so they must have at minimum ores, or materials, to fulfil this manufacturing. They don't have undersea mining operations that are mentioned, so the origin of the glass and metal is unknown to me
@TrulySinclair
@TrulySinclair Жыл бұрын
Self correction, Ryanium is mentioned in the book as a transparent aluminum and apparently the walls of Rapture are ~8 foot thick!
@ambient_gamescapes
@ambient_gamescapes Жыл бұрын
Great questions! I wasn’t aware of the transparent aluminum but it sort of fits with the ambitious weird/mad science of Rapture and the kind of unbridled talent that it was intended to attract. And I always figured that the Big Daddies were entrusted with securing underwater resources (we do see them making repairs at the very least) and that most of the manufacturing & construction took place on site. But as you sort of suggest it seems likely that there’d be off-site but nearby mining and industrial facilities that just simply weren’t shown or mentioned 🤔 But now you’ve really got me thinking
@TrulySinclair
@TrulySinclair Жыл бұрын
@@ambient_gamescapes honestly after commenting this I decided to buy the BioShock: Rapture novel and it’s been an amazing read. The main protagonist is Bill Mcdonagh, one of the few audio diaries found around by him originally painted him as an outstanding engineer or sorts, and sure enough Ryan hired him back in manhattan after installing one of 3 toilets with tin instead of brass for the fitting, and handing Ryan a rather small invoice and sticking to his integrity instead of padding it. He was tested, then became one of the lead engineers of Rapture. We learn manufacturing initially was done as many prefabs and then lowered down, rehashing the Bioshock 2 museum, but with more depth and a POV almost entirely from Bill throughout the book. I’m still reading into the early days of Rapture now, but it’s been fascinating to get this view of Rapture. And a whole new side of Ryan and Cohen and the others! There’s many submarines and submersibles during the initial construction with emphasis on the lobster like claws and remote control technology way before rapture was built which showed how far along Ryan tech was beyond the era it existed in.
