Melnik is famous for its native grape Shiroka Melnishka, which is one of Bulgaria's most popular grapes and was popular in the Ottoman empire as well. This is how Melnik got rich. It was much bigger in the past until it was burned down by the Turks

As always really enjoyable and informative. The way cats and dogs are attracted to you two it's just as well that Edinburgh doesn't have a huge feral problem or you would ner get out of the house much alone travel 🤣Have a great weekend, Jim

You should definitely visit some more Bulgarian monasteries. Most are peaceful, spiritual places in beautiful nature, so it is a special experience. Of course, the most famous one is the Rila monastery, a UNESCO site, but there are thousands of others. Around Sofia there is a lot as well, so take your pick. There are some sites with info on Bulgarian monasteries

That dog is lost. Needed your help. The least you could have done is brought it to a populated place to be fed and watered. All you could say was "I'm being followed". Ugh!

Thank you dog whisperer. How do you think it got there in the first place. There is no populated place for miles. So Pick up a dog and dump it somewhere else to be lost again! There are lots of stray dogs in Bulgaria that get looked after by local people, as do the cats. I will bet in my experience of Bulgaria that he was a local stray. He didn’t look emaciated.
