Pure gold. I've been working with DAWs since the 90's and am always looking for better ways to tighten up drum tracks. Hadn't had the best luck with Melodyne for that in the past but this seems really promising, especially with the added bonus of changing the feel without phasing issues. I'll definitely be trying this out, thank you!

I would really love more info on this. Specifically, when I go to load my Mono OH in my other drum tracks to reference, my Mono OH does not appear here and I am having trouble finding info on what would make it a compatible file. I have tried this in ARA Logic and in Melodyne as a stand alone application.

Hi, I'm glad to see you working with percussion! For conga drums, the whole 'set' - bass, tone, slap, etc. is recorded as one. It would be great if Melodyne could differentiate these sounds and display them as different notes on the grid, so we can edit each of them individually, for example giving different tonal treatment, or adjusting the pitch of the tone hit vs. the bass or slap.
@alexbreyer6921
@alexbreyer6921 Жыл бұрын
Wow. That would be great. Because those sounds bleed into one another so much, I'm not sure how they'd achieve that. But they somehow do it with guitar chords.
@stevenwhite4809

My current workaround, I use the percussive algorithm, and duplicate the track 3 or 4 times, then I use the 'note off' on to make each track have just the one sound I want to control. It is time consuming, but effective. If Melodyne could just recognize that they are different sounds, and place each on its own row, I could select all instances of each tone by clicking on the note name, instead of having to go through manually and click on each individual blob.@@alexbreyer6921

Absolutely Great! I have used Melodyne for many years. Can I apply this multi-mic note assignment technique to adjusting the pitch of a single vocal take which was recorded with multiple microphones?? This would be especially useful to me when I record a room microphone and close microphone on a vocal performance, but I want to retain the ability to change the balance of the two microphones. So, I need to pitch correct both tracks the exact same way.

Hmm, doesnt work great for me. Timing is way out on fills and complex parts. I have also run into an issue just moving parts into time manually. It leaves things short, so, if you have a ride cymbal it stutters because of the gaps - how do you deal with that? Another issue ic digital clicking appearing on other parts. How to deal with these things isnt explained. If anyone knows how to deal with these issues, please drop a line on here. Thanks
@celemony

The key issue here seems to be that you first need to make sure that Melodyne’s automatic note detection is correct before you start editing. This is done in Note Assignment mode. If you need assistance with this, please feel free to reach out to our support guys: www.celemony.com/support

When editing with this method, for some reason I get a lot of clicks and artefacts in the bass drum. Is it possible that using the overhead mic as assignment data breaks the bass drum transients because the sound arrives later to the overhead mic from bass drum? Anyone else having problems like this?
Жыл бұрын
As a workaround for this problem was, that I mixed down a guide track from the gated close mics and used that as assignment data. Then the transients did not break apart when editing/quantizesing

thank you so much for your very very helpful video! I have a question for you: If I use RipX to isolate the drum track of a Song which is an audio file. Put this audio file into Melodyne 5 Studio and choose the Percussive (pitched) Algorithm to separate the single drums elements. How I am going from there to get in the end a single MIDI file which I can put in my DAW along with a Drum VST like EZdrummer 3 and assign drum sounds to each of the drum elements in the MIDI file?
@celemony
@celemony Жыл бұрын
We can’t speak for third-party software, but generally speaking, whatever you see as blobs in Melodyne can be exported to a MIDI file. There’s a ‘Save as MIDI’ option in the menu.

Can you go more into why you’d only use kick and overhead for timing references? It seems like this would wreck the phase relationships in the kit - as the snare mic will see snare before the overhead does. So if the reference is the overhead, and the snare mic is a little earlier, isn’t that going to shear off the transient of the snare?
@tekis0
@tekis0 Жыл бұрын
I believe he used only one of the overheads for the timing reference. The overheads will have some of every drum in them, usually.
@RichardFWDavis-yr2km
@RichardFWDavis-yr2km Жыл бұрын
@@tekis0 Yes, but what's odd is that the overhead is later than the snare mic, which would imply that it would be shaving off the snare transient by a small amount. Seems like it would be better to use a mono mix of direct mics as a reference.
@RichardFWDavis-yr2km
@RichardFWDavis-yr2km Жыл бұрын
This strikes me as a clever workaround , in the manner of the "faster than realtime" hack in ProTools - it fools the system into doing the phase coherent thing by forcing it to use the same timing reference on all tracks, which is fine if extremely cumbersome - I wish they would design the software to do this task specifically - but it would make more sense to use a combo of mics that are direct sources. Even better: tell the software what group of tracks you want to use as a reference, then the software goes through and decides what signals are earliest and uses those for its composite map; then tell it to apply that map to selected other tracks. Two steps instead of many clicks and menu selections.
