The guitarist who recorded also created that hypnotic original wah wah lick. His name name is, Skip Pitts, R.I.P.. As I understand it, Skip introduced this riff to Issac on the spot while Issac was expecting a rather regular 16th note octave riff. When Issac heard what Skip had in mind, it blew his mind, and the rest is history! I chime in with this because, it saddens me when great no-named musician who've done great things go to their graves with what they did, and most behind have no idea of their contributions to major stuff. Cudo's Skip!!!!

After watching their performance on David Letterman (check it out on YT), I checked out Pitts and sadly found that he had passed from cancer. He was a beast on that guitar; he owned it. Everything Isaac touched turned to gold.

That's Charles "Skip" Pitts playing in the video. Actually, he came up with the riff by accident, just messing around setting up his wah-wah pedal. Isaac liked the sound and the rest is history.

I was first introduced to Issac Hayes when I was in Army basic training Jan -March 1971 by our African American drill sergeant. I was a young white kid with 2 years of college from a military family and was digging the Kool rock n roll scene at the time. Our drill sgt lived in the old WW2 barracks with us and would play Isaac Hayes "Hot Buttered Soul" album over and over. It definitely got into my head, but also my soul, especially the song, 'Walk on By". It chilled me out and helped me to sleep due to the high stress of boot camp. I actually got me an 8 track tape of his music. So imagine my surprise to find all his music on KZbin, yeah, especially the song...Walk on By. I'm now retired from the military and verily survived Vietnam, working graveyard shift, age 71 and listening to...always so Kool, Issac Hayes. Thks KZbin 🤣👍

And we weren't even showing the movie! This was the one everyone was talking about, and one of the biggest things that had everyone buzzing was Isaac Hayes! What a theme! What an entrance for John Shaft! It was on everyone's radio, all the time! It was on everyone's record player, all the time! Everyone I knew had the foldout cover for BLACK MOSES on their wall! Hayes deserves every accolade he ever got for his work, and it's so sad that he left us too soon. God Bless you, Isaac, for all the brilliance you gifted us.

'Theme from Shaft' is arguably one of the most influential pieces of music ever produced. I very much doubt that the young audience watching this live performance by the 'master' Isaac Hayes - appreciative as they may be - have the faintest idea of the spectacular impact it had on both 'Black' as well as 'Popular' music in general, when it was first released in the autumn of 1971. Based on a repetitive wah-wah guitar line set against 16-note hi-hat drum sequences - interspersed with Hayes voicing film director Gordon Park's immortal lines [''black private dick, who's a sex machine, to all the chicks.... SHAFT! Ya damn right!'' …….''They say this cat Shaft is a bad mutha - SHUT YOUR MOUTH! - I'm talkin' 'bout Shaft.....THEN WE CAN DIG IT! '] it literally took the music world by storm. Nothing had ever sounded like this before! To illustrate just how dramatic the song's effect was - let me relate a quick story. I was still at school in 1971 and Saturday mornings were always bliss! I could lay in bed late and although it was not my 'cup of tea', listen to the BBC's Radio 1. The morning show was presented by well-known British DJ Noel Edmonds - whose taste in music could best be described as 'bland'. As a young 'Soul' fan I often despaired at the fodder the BBC insisted on playing, and especially DJ's of the ilk of Edmonds. Yet that morning I was in for a total shock. Edmonds suddenly went into this meandering yet impassioned eulogy about a song he had just heard. And with that - he played 'Theme from Shaft'! I was stunned - but even more so by what happened next. Edmonds played it a second time! [which is strictly against the BBC's 'one-play per show' policy]. In fact, Edmonds kept playing it again and again - and actually ended his show with the song. This was simply astonishing and had never happened before in the history of Radio 1 - much less with such an utterly 'mainstream' DJ as Noel Edmonds. Yet throughout the rest of the day, several Radio 1 DJ's did exactly the same - from Dave Lee Travis and Tommy Vance right through to Alexis Korner! I cannot think of a single record that has been given this kind of special treatment by the BBC. Of course one of the reasons may have been that despite the song being powerfully infectious - it was comparatively short [3mins 15seconds]. To the extent that before you had taken in its uniqueness, it was over. You were instantly left craving to hear more. So it was only natural to play it again. I immediately got up, got dressed, went into the town and bought the UK release on the Stax Record label - banana yellow in colour, with the infamous 'clicking' fingers logo displayed in a black box on the left hand side. [This was the 'standard' 3min 15 second version]. I also bought two copies of film soundtrack LP. But even better, and after several weeks of searching I managed to acquire the extremely rare full 4mins 34 seconds long album version 'single' 45. [This edition is lemon-yellow in colour and the 'clicking' fingers black box is replaced by a light blue one to denote the difference]. A year later, I added Joe Bataan's very creditable Latin version of the song. 'Shaft' revolutionised modern music - leading to a plethora of copy-cat imitations that borrowed heavily from Haye's masterpiece. From the Temptations 'Papa's was a Rolling Stone' to Curtis Mayfield's 'Superfly'. It was also a massive 'crossover' hit in the both the Black and Popular music charts. It was covered by numerous singers and bands, parodied on shows as diverse as the 'Simpsons' and 'Sesame Street'. It was even claimed to be one of the first 'disco' songs. [Hayes even re-issued a highly 'discofied' version in 1978 - 'Shaft II']. Although I already had several of his pre-Shaft recordings [ie; 'Hot Buttered Soul', 'The Isaac Hayes Movement' and 'To Be Continued'] I became one of Isaac Hayes' biggest fans - buying anything and everything I could from the great man. Then in the late 1970's, I was lucky enough to see him in concert - and was completely blown away. [I had expected a raucous, foot-stomping gala. Instead it was an evening of sublime musicianship, arrangements and composition]. I just sat back and let Hayes' beautiful music wash over me. Genius is a much over-used expression. But Isaac Hayes WAS a genius. He is greatly missed and his legacy to the world of music could be no more finely demonstrated than with the remarkable 'Theme from Shaft'. RIP Isaac Hayes [1942 - 2008].

WOW! Fantastic! Isaac is cool dude personified. RIP the lovely lady that produces the unique guitar sound. Shaft has always been an ultra-cool number. A gift from god to be able to write that sort of masterpiece. Even if I'm down, when I'm watching this, without me realising, I find I have a huge smile on my face. Thank you for such a great performance guys and girls. xx

That 'Lovely Lady' was a guy. Charles 'Skip' Pitts from Memphis, Tennessee;using a Cry Baby pedal to make the 'wah-wah' effect.

@@neilmccann5826 Thank you. My bad. I stand corrected. Years ago, my uncle told me the guitarist was a woman and I just assumed this was the woman. I wonder, was there ever a female guitarist with the band, either live or in the studio?

So cool to see Isaac again. No kidding Isaac, we saw you nearly 40 years ago in person concert at Ocean Shores, WA. I'm the guy who yelled out do 'Good Love 69' and you replied to the audience 'who are you?' You said that was a tune we did kinda-sorta for fun when we were taking a break in the studio. Fond memories from us regardless. Dean Seattle
