Great job Tim! Amazing how an object of that size will shake an 800 lbs. lathe with such ease. Beautiful piece.

Nothing makes me feel more happy then turning Burl wood, and trying to figure out what to make of them. Unfortunately though my lathe gave up on me and I'm trying to save up for a new one that's more reliable. Happy turning my friend 😊. I watch a lot of turning videos from a lot of people, and turning wood is my therapy. Oh yeah I also use a 6" orbital sander on my larger pieces to cut down on sanding, and it's a lot faster.

It is a beautiful piece. The figure and the color are outstanding. I have mixed emotions about losing all the natural edge though. However I don't have any suggestions about how it could have been done differently either. Thank you for sharing. Have a great day and stay safe.🙂🙂

I'm not sure I would have the intestinal fortitude to turn on that lathe with something that out of balance. You are a brave man Tim! A beautiful piece too.

That's nice, Tim. The silicone cooking mat was a great idea. I may have to use that one. Bill

It reminds me a little bit of Stuart Batty’s off center bowl. Turned out really nice.

Beautiful piece Tim. I got addicted to turning about 9 years ago and yours was the first KZbin channel I subscribed to. I learned a lot about turning from your videos so thank you for that. Keep up the excellent work.

You must have special pants custom made to hold those things. That piece of burl is insanely sharp and heavy and off-balance.

Negative rake is what makes your tool specifically for scraping. It’s like spreading butter on your toast, the edge of your knife is pointing in the opposite direction of your motion. The stress on the edge is reduce that way and your tool angle is allowed to be steeper, making your edge hold better. Also scraping is more forgiving, when your edge is no longer perfectly sharp.

I think I would have added thickness with a resin back and possibly a layer of wood as well. Unfortunately when faced with a disappointing piece of work, we can lose motivation.

I think if I had the nerve to turn it I would have left all of the bumps and knots on it and just turned a bowl where you did. I think you did a good job though

You should have double-stick taped it to a board and bandsawed off the high spot. You wasted enough to make a small piece.
