I agree with several of the comments below about using a taller container of water. The problem is that the aluminum is not completely solid when it hits bottom. A 30 gallon drum cut so it just barely fits under the table would be good. Trickle a little water in to the drum full as water evaporates and is splashed out. Don’t worry about the water temperature as the difference in the 1200 deg. Al and the water really doesn’t matter if the water is 75 or 175 degrees. When you are taping, I’d rather see the engine melt than the molten Al dripping into the water. During the video we caught a couple glimpses down the burner tube. I’d like to see you show what it looks like down the burner tube while the burner is on and off. Keep it, I like your videos.

Next time you might want to try a taller bucket so it would have more time to cool before it comes in contact with the aluminum at the bottom.

A taller water tower is what you need. Cut a metal 55 gallon drum to fit under the table and you'll be good to go. Then you won't need to keep adding cold water to the bucket.

1st thing i clicked on this morning even put off my cooler morning outside stuff to do really like the set up now very impressive plus this way i wouldnt think you would need to do a remelt just sell as flakes or droplets that was interesting how it formed a spire I had to delete everything I had written haha

If you could drip directly into your crucible, perhaps with the crucible tilted a little so the stream hits the side of the crucible at an oblique angle to reduce/eliminate splash... Then you could retain a lot of the heat & directly place the crucible into your forge so as to remelt it quicker & be able to scrape off the dross. Simple set up... thanks for sharing!

What if you cut down a metal drum use that as the water bucket put a valve on the side you can open & put a hose on to drain further into the yard so u can drain out hot put in cold.. *ALSO an Inch or 1-1/2" 2''s below the water put a metal screen with 1/4" holes or 1/2" holes & that would break up the aluminum pieces & let them cool faster & would move them around the bucket a little bit more.. Im sure that would work but you would have to test the screen size & how deep it is in the water for it to work right.. But i believe that would work..*

Okey I want to thank you sir for your brilliant idea that you passed down to me I have owned my copper scraping business for a little less than a year and right you are that we put everything we have into setting up our business and we just can't go all out and go buy a $2,000 copper wire stripper so I put together a blade clamped it in a flaring pipe threader and it is by far the best one I have had yet and I don't think I will ever buy a brand new copper stripper my grandfather gave me the tool and I believe I will continue to use it until I save up for a new stripper thanks again for everything you do for us.

This is a great setup, and how they do it overseas, you just need to take a 55 gallon drum and cut it down to fit under your table. Take a piece of plywood and add four wheels to it so you can pull the 55 gallon drum out from under the table when it is full . All the individual droplets will become pellets and you do not need to keep adding water. All the small pellets might have a little more oxide than a large ingot, but this way is so much easier.

I am thinking about using an air tank from a compressor, use a inlet with a valve to control the cold water in and use a drain near the top , and like you said put it on wheels to pull it out from under the table. I have a big tank down in the field, think it had a leak in the bottom so I will have to j.b. weld the crack or weld it. thanks for the idea's and thanks for stopping by

I think it would take a lot of copper tubbing, that is a lot of very hot metal going into the bucket, it would make a great water heater to heat the shop in the winter, may start with some ice blocks and get a better tank with a water inlet with valve and have a drain valve near the top to drain off the hot water, so it would have a constant supply of cold water

I know it is not what you wanted to happen but it was kinda awesome watching the aluminum tower grow and pop out of the water. obviously you will need more water or a way to cycle colder water thru to keep it cold with that much molten metal. maybe a bag of ice to throw some in as you go.

the tank is an old upright compressor tank, I took the drain cock off of the bottom and made it a water inlet with a shutoff valve, but I didn't have the water running at the time as it floods the area, I need to dig a drainage ditch, so I don't get flooded

If you get yourself a piece of angle iron and put underneath your table with hose drilling an angle iron where you get droplets, instead of drops you control the size of your droplets. That's from gathered information of watching people do this

Reminds me of a shot tower, if you poured the molten aluminum through a screen you could get exactly the same sized spheres, may even be a product.

They were called towers for a reason though. For the drops to form spheres, you need a lot of height. The size of the holes determined the size of the spheres. Granted if the water is cold enough, you wouldn't need as much height, but they would still be tear-shaped. I'd take the sprayer off and run the hose to the bottom of the drum and let it run the entire time. Or dump a lot of ice in it every few minutes as well.

Molten aluminium is actually able to react with water. The oxide layer on the molten droplet will often prevent that but once in a while you'll get a reaction that manifests itself as a violent explosion. Take care and try to avoid water

Instead of a bucket, have a trough with a water spigot at the top and the trough runs down to a collection bucket with a grate or screen in the bottom. A constant stream of water will cool the aluminum and carry it down to the collection point.

standard practice for drip casting is a slide to slow the material down and give it some angular velocity as it hits the water. look at a shot casting setup.

@@Okiescrapper slide can be steel. doesnt need to be wet or even touch the coolant. you can add a little fabric softener to the quench water if you want. but just plain water works fine too. bigger bucket will take longer to heat up...you can add cooling by plumbng in a copper coil to the outside of your bucket to act as a thermosiphon. or just plumb in a hose and let it slowly add back fresh cold water.

It seems to me that spraying water in the can under the dripping aluminum is some-what not needed because the the molten aluminum is over 1200 degrees Fahrenheit, so what does it really matter if the water is 50 or 90 degrees. O I see the aluminum is getting close to the top of the water can, well that might make a difference. I remember when I asked the satellite dish installer if it would help if the dish was mounted of the roof rather than on the ground, .... well I did feel kind of silly after asking him that. :) I sure would like seeing the droplets of aluminum. O I see them at 39:00, thanks for showing that, & I see the droplets are more separated at bottom because of having more time to cool off as they are falling down.

yes the cooler the water the faster the aluminum will harden, if the water gets hot the aluminum won't cool fast enough then they stick together and grow to the top fast. I fixed it where I can run cold water in from the bottom and the hot water will flow out the top

Aluminum melts at 1221F…I can’t imagine it’s molten a split second after it hits the water…even if you water is boiling, that’s still roughly 1000 degrees cooler than the melting point of aluminum…cool vid for sure

All the stuff in the bottom is loose. The stuff at the top did not have as much cooling distance and ended up melting together a little bit. I say melt into the style that people want to buy it in. I have no idea about the market for this stuff and what shapes they want to buy it in. Good video.

now they would be hard to remelt. it works good the way it is, some trash falls into the ingots so I remelt latter in a crucible so I can get cleaner ingots, and I make them small, so if a person has a small crucible they will fit in it,

Drip the aluminum on the outer edge and rotate the water bucket and the drops will have to go in different places. A variable speed drill could rotate it. Maybe a sit and spin cut flat for the stand

it might help to put a stirrer driven by a wipermotor inside the cooling bucket (bout halfway up ) , the way the drops of molten aluminium have less of a chance to fuse together

I think the idle thing would be for it to drop into a water troth with fast moving water from a pump and have the water push it down the troth to a big tank where the pump will recirculate the water back to the top of the troth, might work, I am thinking about mounting the whole setup on a trailer so I can move it around as needed and that will give me more height on the unit for a taller barrel if needed

Cut down a drum to set under the table. Run a water line with a float valve to keep it topped off as it dehydrates. From the lower part of the barrel run a line to a radiator set up with a fan to circulate the water from the barrel and cool it somewhat. Then back to the lower barrel. I might be over thinking this but it's an idea none the less.

How reliable is the copper sulfate solution you use as a Magnesium litmus test, and what is the concentration? Thanks, you are a genius, I used to hot shot my large stuff and bust it up before a melt, this looks like a moon shot to me, saves a ton of work.☺

the copper sulfate works good grind a spot and spray with the solution if nothing happens it is cast aluminum, if it turns dark it is die cast, if it bubbles it is magnesium, use zep root killer I think I got mine at home depot, use one tea spoon to a spray bottle

put a much deeper water resevoir under the table maybe 4 or 5 inches from the underneath the table. that might give it more time to cool still need coolwater but that might help might be wortha try maybe. goodluck

With a shovel, you're not limited to the height of the table, you could dig down and use a 55g drum or a livestock water trough. You're spraying water into the drum, but I'm thinking Saturn 5 launch, water cooling the exhaust. Take a pump and have a stream(s) of water starting at the table that the droplets ride down. Better would be a rain gutter, 1/2 pipe, a trough, maybe inverted angle iron. Slant a piece towards the ground at an angle from the table hole to another trough next to the table. Pump water from the bottom trough into the top of the angle iron near the hole. The water cools and flushes the aluminum down the angle iron to the other tough where you can continually rake it or shovel it out of the way of the incoming pieces. If you treat the bottom trough as a sled or wagon, you could slowly drag it throughout the melting process to reduce the buildup in 1 spot. Likewise a circular drum on a motorized turntable allows the hotter pieces to drop onto cooler ones. Bonus points for a ramp to empty the pellets from the barrel as it rotates.

I am thinking about mounting the setup on a trailer I can keep the bottom open where the water barrel will be so it can be taller, then If I want to move it into the shade or out of the wind I can, and I was thinking the same thing a water slide to start cooling it on the way down into the water, I have some channel iron about an inch wide, just need to get a small pond pump to recirculate the water, and I can turn the heat down a bit so it drips and not pour like it did in the video

If you have a lot more water then it will be able to soak up a lot more heat before the temperature increases. A longer column of water would give the drops of aly more time to cool too. I think your oil intake tube might have been cracking for a while so really high levels of air would have been needed. Once you fixed the tube, the oil seemed to get sucked up much faster.

thinking of an air compressor tank on end, with a water inlet with valve and have a drain valve near the top to drain off the hot water, so it would have a constant supply of cold water

thinking about using an old air tank so I can put a water inlet with a valve shutoff near the bottom of the tank and have a drain hose near the top so the area doesn't get flooded the tank would be bigger and deeper too.

It pushes the oil in a spray to the other end and air will flow through the pipe away from the air hose, if it did get too hot I would use a longer pipe. Thanks for stopping by Garry

in the melting pot when this video was made I had a thin layer of refractory cement, I have put a 1 inch kao wool around the outside now, and the blue furnace I used perlite and Portland cement

go to eBay and search aluminum ingot, guys buy them for sand casting ingots go for $2.00 a lb. on up seen some over $4.00 a lb. most scrap yards won't buy ingots, not sure about aluminum shot

I'm thinking about making one myself , but instead of a propane preheater I'm thinking of heating up the.nozzle with an open flame and cup like an antique blowtorch. How many psi of are are you running? Are ya using a regulator or just a ball valve?

well damm, this is the reddest neck thing I have seen, No disrespect intended, you should not sell the Aluminum to the scrapyard, Those or almost works of art that should be sold on Etsy, either as art supplies or Art forms in themselves.

I won't be selling to a scrap yard, aluminum ingots go for $2.00 - $4.00 on eBay, just looked at Etsy and that may be a good place to sell too, I have a store set up just never put any items in it to sell. I need to experiment with the melter a deeper bucket, or a water slide to cool the metal as it falls or slides down into the bucket, it is a work in progress
