Not sure where you're from but here in the US most of them won't even buy them...... 22 year Master Plumber here I tried it before with all the copper that I get no one would even touch it I ended up having to put it on ebay..... and then eBay want some monster cut so you lose so much money not worth it

Never forget to use an oil or similar viscose (non reactive) coating to prevent oxidation of the coppers surface! This will make sure the copper can be sold for full price as clean ingots are more valuable.

Why do we quench our ingots? I tried to machine a quenched ingot and the grains were huge and it basically fell apart! Is it just for show? Slow cooling should leave a more usable copper. Any one have thoughts on this?

@@vicferrari9380 Hot copper gets oxidized in water and is thus "lost" (Kind of like iron, though copper is MUCH less reactive than iron, therefore you only ever see the green oxide layer on copper after long exposures or at high temperatures)

Wanted to see what happens if you put a little ascorbic acid in the water that the copper got cooled in, because it has anti-oxidant properties. Look up ascorbic acid + copper sulphate.

Cool video ! Does quenching a hot ingot do any harm? Having worked with lots of copper wire and pipe and knowing how it work-hardens if flexed more than a few times, I kind of have this gut feeling that quenching to rapid-cool isn't really a great thing to do. And ... that is an AWESOME shredding machine !

Your ingots cant be pure copper, all that pipe work you put in was full of soldered joints.

Thats what you saw him doing by skimming the surface of the molten copper. The impurities float on the top and you skim it off. To refine it even more pure I've heard you need to add borax or something. I'm an idiot so what do I know.

No. That slag is the unburnable stuff, sand,ash, etc. the solder melts at lower temp than the copper so the ingots will be mixed. Not pure
