I know it's a gross simplification but for all intents and purposes, all that crushed glass is basically reduced to "sand" to alleviate beaches that have been harvested of their sand that has been exported to other beaches.

since you asked, the reason glass is clear is because it does not have a crystalline​ structure (amorphous). all of the molecules are in a random arrangement which allows light to pass through. my guess is impurities that form crystalline bonds would cause it to be cloudy or non transparent.

rubikschu I'm not totally sure, but I think it's there in order for the glass to crystallize because in order for things to crystallize there has to be some sort of imperfection like the little washer. This is the same with water as well. Again, not totally sure, so I might be wrong.

Ethan Lan Glass is amorphous so doesn't crystallize I think the washer is used to heat the sand as it would be hard to get localised heat using a blowtorch on sand grains

I used an oxyacetylene cutting torch. The jet of pure oxygen burned out the worst of the impurities, leaving me with light blue glass. Unfortunately I had no kiln to cool it in, so it just shattered after a few minutes, but it was cool while it lasted.
