This Time Out, The Bass Position Is Filled By STEVEN MCDONALD (RED KROSS), And The Current Second-Drummer Is RAY MAYORGA (STONE SOUR, HELLYEAH, MINISTRY). WE ARE THE ASTEROID's Guitarist GARY CHESTER Also Shows Up To Lend Some Brutalist Rhythm Guitar. The Results Are A Noisy, Towering, Psychedelic Acid-Test Held Steady By MELVINS Sludgy, Clipped Approach To Alt.Heavy Metal; In Other Words, MELVINS Are At The Top Of Their Game & Feeling Frisky!
MELVINS Has Legs! The Band Has Been Plying Their Very Specifically Eccentric Brand Of Heavy Music Since About 1983, Creating A Gigantic, Eclectic Back Catalogue In The Process. MELVINS Are Prolific! Founded In Montesano, Washington In 1983 By BUZZ OSBOURNE, The First Lineup Had MATT LUKIN On Bass, And MIKE DILLARD On The Drum Kit. DILLARDLeft The Group In 1984, And The Second Permanent Member Of The Band, DALE CROVER, Came In To The Drummer Position & Lit A Fire Under The Band That Has Not Yet Gone Out!
In 1985, MELVINS Got Their Big Break; C/Z Records Was Created To Document The Nascent Washington Scene, And Released "Deep Six," A Sampler Of Local Bands, Which Included Four Tracks (!) By The MELVINS! In 1986, The Band Released Its Debut, The "Six Songs" E.P. On C/Z Records (later Re-Releases Expanded And Retitled This As "8 Songs," "10 Songs," And Eventually "26 Songs" On Ipecac Recordings In 2003.) They Released Their First Studio Record In 1986, "Gluey Porch Treatments." This Was Later Paired With Their Second Album, "Ozma," For The Boner Records CD Release.
Little Known Fact: DALE CROVER Played The Drums For NIRVANA's Ten-Song Demo That Got Them Signed. CROVER Also Appears On Several Tracks From NIRVANA's Debut, "Bleach."
When BUZZ & DALE Decided To Move Their Home Base To San Francisco, MATT LUKIN Stayed Behind In Seattle, And Formed Grunge Royalty, MUDHONEY!
Returning The Support, At KURT COBAIN's Recommendation MELVINS Were Signed To Major Label Atlantic Records, Where They Released Three Exceptional, Experimental Albums That Alienated The Record Company, Had Naught But Disdain For The Mainstream, And Gained Them NO New Fans (Except For Me! I Jumped On Board For Their Second Atlantic Record, "Stoner Witch!")
Variously Described As A Sludge Metal, Grunge, Experimental Rock, Alternative Metal, And Alternative Rock Band, MELVINS Explored A Variety Of Heavy Stylings Throughout Their Storied Career, Including Noise Rock, Stoner Metal, Doom Metal, Stoner Doom Metal, Dark Ambient, Noise, Jazz-Rock, Avant-Garde, Electroacoustic, Punk, And Cowpunk.
