Omg I wasn't sure that the names of the enzymes that change the position of the phospholipids were actually true. Lol they sound funny. Also nice video, this style of visual learning with a voice over really helps when learning about this topic.

If hydrogens are present in the same plane, it is referred to as a cis fat; if the hydrogen atoms are on two different planes, it is referred to as a trans fat. The cis double bond causes a bend or a “kink” that prevents the fatty acids from packing tightly, keeping them liquid at room temperature

Hello Again Arpan. Why is it important that the phospholipid heads rotate, or move laterally or invert themselves? Does it relate to fluidity, or does this allow some gap in the membrane to permit placement of a new receptor, or surface protein?

Its important to keep the membrane fluid....molecular movement, kinetic energy etc keeps the membrane phospholipids dynamic in nature. Other wise it would solidify or become extremely rigid...this kind of thing happens with coconut oil if left in cold

This was wonderful! Do we know the different compositions of lipids in various cell types in the body? What effect on the cytoplasm or the nucleus does the fluid membrane have? Does the membrane composition effect the function or purpose of the cytoplasm? Does the composition of the lipid membrane or its changing fluidity affect gene expression?

Wow. thanks for your interest. All of the questions that you have asked are burning questions in the field. Indeed the lipid composition is different for different cell types.Change in lipid composition alters parameters like membrane rigidity and many others. In fact the way 2 cells can communicate with each other might change if the lipid concentration in their membrane changes. Membrane might have domains called lipid rafts which harbours receptors and modulate signalling pathway. So change in lipid concentration can actually change those aspects which might lead to gene expression change

Thanks for your reply! Another question: Does the lipid membrane have anything to do with the way the cell looks? eg: a myocyte, vs an epithelial cell vs a liver cell? Or is the cell structure more related to cellular microtubules?
