SNK started the memory card trend, with the Neo•Geo. Including a memory card slot, on both arcade, and home consoles. Back in 1991, I actually had an arcade operator yell at me, thinking I was trying to mess with their MVS, when inserting my memory card. He was cool once I explained what I was doing. And even threw in a bunch of free credits to watch me finish Magician Lord, by starting on the final level. I'd also plug my headphones into the MVS, when playing it. SNK was ahead of the game back then.

@@gentarofourze We're talking gaming console game save hardware backups though. I'm old enough to remember my father complaining about his company's reel to reel tape jamming up, when they performed their system backup. It was a popular medium for computer main frames, but you aren't fitting one of those in your pocket very easily. You could also include cardboard punch cards, and ticker tape, in that category as well. But we won't. :)

And if anything bad happens to the system and it's unfixable just buy a new one, pull out the card, put it in the new system and the save data is moved without waiting hours for the old system to transfer everything to the new one (if anything can even be moved because the new systems encrypt the hard drive with a key that is only on that system so taking the drive from a broken system and putting it in a working one to transfer the saves doesn't work) like on new systems

at the time withou cloud storage technology it really was, i remember going around the town with my mem card dueling friends at yu-gi-oh forbbiden memories, here in my country we had a lot of "homemade" game center's , people here with some spare money just bought some consoles and organized a place for folks to play daily, sometimes it was their own houses haha, garages and empty rooms, evene empty small houses it was like the uber from that time, to make extra cash, and they really earned some decent amount of money that way, i would go around all those places at my city on weekends to play with people, in two days i would have gone to 8-9 game centers to play playstation games with my mem card, and i owned a ps1 at the time, but playing with lots of people around was much more fun than playing alone at home, many kids didn't even bothered buying home consoles, because we always meet at those places to play together, what good memories of my past.

This brings back "memories" of Interact's VMEM Memory Card System for the PS1. It connected to the console thru the rear parallel port and gave the user around 30 memory cards in one unit. I still have mine but I never use it anymore fearing it might go dead at a crucial point. This MemCard Pro looks like a much better solution.

This is pretty incredible! If it ever gets file access through the wifi interface, I'd totally love to try myself at writing a sync client to synchronize emulator saves to a VMC. I mean, imagine this: You are on the go and played a little bit of Crash Bandicoot 3 on your phone via RetroArch. When you get home, the files for your saves are picked up and stored on something like a NAS. When your PS1 turns on, the NAS sees that the memory card has joined the wifi network and dumps the updated save into that VMC immediately. When you now launch the game on the big screen, your progress will be there too!

I've come to read that one doesn't want to place game saves on the MemCard Pro until you have first accessed it by the Xstation... If you have any insight to lend, how should I first "access" / task the MemCard prior to transferring games from other cards and downloaded saves from online? --- In addition to my own/relatives' progress, I plan to have the gameFAQ's PS1 library of game saves on possibly a separate card unless it's easy to create [folders] to organize groups of VMCs if not in a huge, single [alphabetical?] list.

@@That_Handle I honestly just did what Bob suggested in this video. Made new cards on the MemCardPro to transfer my old saves to, then renamed the folders to the number for each game. If you aren’t familiar, you should look into Free HD Boot (FHDB). It’s great for loading up all your games on a hard drive and offers saves on an emulated memory card. I don’t think it’s perfect, as it’s hard to move saves on the hard drive, and all drives will eventually fail, but it beats juggling 16 memory cards.
@jameslangridge8849
@jameslangridge8849 3 жыл бұрын
You can actually copy saves to and from ps2 memory cards with wLaunchElf file manager through FMCB. You psuPaste them to and from a usb drive, and can therefore have way more space. Im using a 16gb memory stick, and since a whole ps2 memory card is only 8mb, i doubt I'll ever run out of space. The only ps2 that doesn't work with fmcb is slim 90000 series, but there are other ways to run homebrew on those.😄

I followed the steps below but you have to do each game individually, as it will need to create a folder with files in: 1. Load the game in XStation, MemCard will show it 2. Open the PSX lid 3. Reset the PSX 4. In the bios, copy the save for that game to the memcard pro 5. Rinse, repeat for your other saves Thanks to Thanos for this!

4:45 confused me. You said "Each VMC is 15 blocks, with 8 channels per block, so 120 total blocks per VMC." Did you mean to say "Each channel is 15 blocks with 8 channels per VMC...?" This would mean that the PS1 would see each channel as a single 15-block memory card and that I'd need to switch to a different channel if my save were on a different memory card. And then if I get above 8 15-block "memory cards" (channels) used, I'd have to know which VMC and which channel a save game were on in order to load it up? Am I understanding this correctly?

I don’t believe PS1 memory cards were a step backwards because it had some advantages that the battery required devices didn’t have. •NES, SNES, N64 & GB/C games all have a time when the battery will run dry. Then your save files will be gone for good unless you back them up before hand using a 3rd party device. •The Saturn also required a battery for saving games “it often died faster than the others if you heavily used the console” and unfortunately because many of the games vary in size. You could fill it up with 10 games or 1 with Sim City 2000. When it came to the PS1’s memory card it didn’t use a battery to store your games. Most only take up 1 save block unless you wanted to use more save files for a game. Most notably SoTN. However Because there are a large quantity of good games for the ps1. 15 blocks of data definitely isn’t enough for 1 memory card. I can see the value in this card when looking for bugs in game translations before they are officially released. Also if you only want to deal with 1 memory card all together. But I think i’ll just stick to my memory cards until something goes bad in them. The Third party cards usually die faster though. At least the ones from back then.

Is there a way for the X-Station to not use a game-specific VMU, but a manually selected VMU that contains mixed game saves instead? Reason being for those games that have certain features or easter eggs when saves from different games are present in the MC.
@ShinryuZensen

It looks like the naming is only to make the PS load that specific MC on a specific game, the saves you have in there shouldn't matter.

@@GyroDragonaPlays Working with PS2 savegames is not as easy as with PS1. There is only one program that handles memory encryption correctly: ps3mca-tool. This program is mainly used to install FCMB on PS2 Memory Cards. Perhaps encryption is the main problem to be able to support ps2 in memcard pro. Sony long ago threatened those responsible for various programs that sought to bypass encryption.

Quick question in regards to this device. You mentioned that there would need to be a hardware modification done in order for it to work on a PS2 Slim. What did you mean by that exactly and is there a detailed explanation about that? Thanks in advance, and this was a really insightful video! I missed the preorder window it looks like but hopefully I'll catch the next batch!

Eh, every generation had at least one system with a way to save that didn't need anything but the hardware or game. The PS1 was the only one from its generation that couldn't (the N64 used a mix of on-cart and separate memory units) and the Xbox was the system with internal storage in its generation (although it had memory units too). After that it became commonplace again (plus the 360 had separate memory units and eventually even let you use USB drives to hold data).

Having all PS1 and PS2 saves in one card should have been the goal. If a future firmware update adds support for PS2 memory card saves, ONLY THEN I'll be interested. Until then it's just a very expensive (for my pocket at least) PS1 memory card with lots of features.

@@RetroRGB Where did I even mention the word "easy"? Since It uses the same interface as the PS2, and the PS2 can read both PS2 and PS1 memory cards, one would just assume such "universal" memory card is possible, given the right know-how. I mean, look at the MODE: Sega Saturn, Sega Dreamcast, AND the Sony PS1? That´s exponentially more complex than a memory card that already shares the same interface... and no, I won't make one, unless it's a cardboard cutout, and even then I might mess it up.

Just solder to the ram slot directly then on the other end have a slot with contacts on the front and back so we can piggyback ram like the og xbox? Front and back i say only because this idea is one i have for my jailbroken base model ps4. I wish someone could make these cables or i knew of a place i could pay someone to customize me one

Just so everyone knows, there are already many memory cards that can support more than 8mb on PS2 and more than 16mb on Gamecube. These are third party yes, but these are sturdy and hold more than enough space to help save as much data as you want and need. Look them up on eBay, they are a dime a dozen and worth the buy and you won't have to wait for a MemCard Pro version of them anytime soon because of how much memory they hold compared to PS1.

1:25 This is the part where I have to tell you that there are some fake memory cards that aren't even the full 128 kilobytes of storage that a real memory card has. They had only 64 KB of storage, so when you saved more than seven blocks of data the memory card overwrites existing data, which corrupted another save, or worse, the formatting of the card, meaning you would lose all saves. This is what those fake 64 KB memory cards looked like, too.
