SO GLAD to see someone making the “old school” banana pudding from scratch! To me there is simply no comparing this to the store bought pudding mix version. My mother in law made it this way, the recipe was actually on the Nilla wafer box. And I LOVE that monkey story!

In 1981 as a one year newlywed I made my husband's favorite dessert, banana pudding. Meringue and everything. It was beautiful. Transferring it to the oven I dropped the dish and it smashed to smithereens. I never tried again. Fast forward to a week ago and I bought Nilla wafers for my 2 year old only grandchild and remembered that incident. Synchronistic recipe Diane.

Miss MeMe that looks incredible. I love banana pudding, but my husband hates it, so I can only make it when my granddaughters come over. They're on my side :) I can't wait to make it homemade. I do have a little trick for the meringue if anyone is interested. If you add 1/4 teaspoon of almond or vanilla extract to the meringue as you whip it, it has a great flavor to it. I live in Georgia, and my mother was an excellent cook of southern foods. She used flower for her custard and put vanilla flavor in the custard, always used Nilla Wafers, and lots of bananas, as we were a huge family. She only made this on Sundays or special holidays. I love banana pudding.

My grandmother made banana pudding for our Easter buffet every year. I make it for my husband and myself now. It is one of my favorites! We use Cool Whip instead of making meringue, but I will be trying it your way because I love meringue pies! We like ours cold but I bet it would be good warm too! The monkey story made me laugh. Meme I just got home from my mama’s house and she had told me that she had a surprise. I walked in and I said where’s my surprise and she made me close my eyes and hold out both hands and she had bought me both of your cookbooks! I am so excited and about to bake something. Yay! It's MeMe! Happy you did this! I always have bananas and whether they are going to get eaten before they go bad is anyone's guess. I LOVE banana bread! And I am pretty good at it, but family dosen't go for "breads". And I do not care for banana pudding, but it just hit me and I am not a stupid woman or young-Why don't I make banana pudding? What a sweet, sweet story you told about your sister! We love banana pudding, and I can remember my mother making it for holidays, but with the boxed Jello pudding mix you had to cook. My Mom made the pudding part from scratch too. She never made meringue, just layered bananas, wafers and pudding & refrigerated it. I was the only kid that didn't like bananas so she always made me a little bowl without bananas!

I've never made banana pudding from scratch, but you make me want to try. When I was young, my mother used to use the pudding mix that you cook over the stove and so it was hot but of course it wasn't made from scratch. Yours looked so pretty and delicious! Love the monkey story! I have a good banana pudding story. My husband's brother and his wife have a house in Maui. We have been fortunate to visit there often and spend time there. One of the times we went to a company picnic. My sister in law was working so I offered to make something. So I made my mother's recipe for banana pudding. It made a huge hit! Nobody there had ever had d it before. Banana tree's everywhere there but they had never had it before. One guy wanted me to divorce my husband and marry him so he could have banana pudding all the time. My husband heard this and told him we would give him the recipe! This recipe makes a cold pudding and uses sour cream. It is delicious. This same guy was actually invited to my brother in law's house a couple of weeks ago for dinner. I didn't make it for that occasion though but told him I would be making it and be sure he had some. He told me if I didn't he would have the police come and get me off the plane if I tried to leave without making it. Lol, I made some while we were there and he was sent home with a Cool Whip container of pudding! Keep the recipes coming. I look forward to them!
