I have a neighbor who doesn't speak a word of English but we always wave & smile at each other. We live in an extremely poor area.. I saw him riding a beatup kid-sized bicycle so I gave him my beach cruiser. He found me a brand new portable clothes washer. (I didn't have a washer at all). He communicated that he wanted a bicycle for his friend, so I gave him my mountain bike. He always hangs huge bags of fresh fruit and random groceries on my front gate, and throws BBQ meat over the fence for my dog. I've even helped him sell things on Craigslist. Poverty and language barriers don't have to stop people from being kind to each other.

People do the same in my part of North Carolina. The bereaved aren't considered to be entertaining guests. Friends, family, and neighbors gather, and _abide_ with them. When there's a crowd in the house, it's interesting to hear the tone of all the conversations swell, crest, and diminish like waves all over the house, depending on whether the bereaved is remembering funny events or just sitting silently. It can be lovely to hear, or it can make you want to scream if you want a quiet, private space and you're not high enough on the mourning ladder to qualify for it (those dishes won't wash themselves).

We should all just be nicer. My elderly neighbour lost her husband, her adult kids visit but do nothing to help, I’ve arranged a carer, did her lawns the whole summer ( Gardner was isolating) set her up on a tablet, Fb, KZbin etc. And I do her food shopping amongst tiger jobs. She’s an absolute sweetheart, I’m doing it for completely selfish reasons, I want her to be my neighbour as long as possible.

So heartwarming. When my dearly loved cat died, I got a lot of cards with photos from neighbors. He had a habit of touring the neighborhood in nice weather and more people knew him than I was aware. He was the friendliest cat I ever saw, he liked everyone. My favorite was the photo of him on my neighbor's steps with a dead mouse, captioned "the day we moved in, Spot brought us a gift".

After my husband was arrested 17 months ago due to addiction/depression issues, I was expecting the modern version of torches and pitchforks from the town because of that “guilt by association” BS you hear so much about, especially after the media got wind of the story. Instead, the town rallied and gave us donations of food, clothes, money to help me get on my feet until I found a job (I had been a stay-at-home mom for 17 years), and even Christmas presents for the kids. You could’ve knocked me over with a feather! Even now, they help us out because things are still tight financially (minimum wage only goes so far!), and I’m trying to return the favors as best I can-I’m giving plants from my flower beds to a neighbor with a new house who’s still figuring out garden spaces, we’re swapping vegetables from our garden for eggs from the next-door neighbor’s chickens, my younger daughter (who aspires to become a veterinarian) is helping a neighbor train her new puppy, etc. I’m still suffering from PTSD and other issues due to the raid and arrest and probably always will, but I’m grateful for the support from my community.

Right after I posted the above comment, I went to do my laundry in the apartment complex's laundry room (very small two washers and two dryers). I stay until it is all done. A lady came in as my clothes were drying. I did not have a mask on and offered to put one on or step outside while she put her clothes in to wash. She screeched at me about not having a mask on. I put it on and stepped outside. She was furious because now she had to run the washers empty to kill the virus because I had used them. She would have to run the dryers empty for the same reason. Both cost $1.75 to use. She demanded that I pay for them to be sanitized. I refused. I cannot wait to move out of here into a better less friendly place.

My landlady in Hawaii had an odd-sized gap between her house and the shed and so had a floppy piece of trellis to keep the dogs in. I remembered "helping" my grandfather build a gate when I was 5, borrowed her tools and made her a custom sized Z frame gate. Not bad for someone whose last woodwork report said I was "a pleasant, polite pupil who shows no aptitude for this subject." My favorite rapid on the Wenatchee was "Granny's rapid". Granny was an old lady who lived next to it and let kayakers put in at the bottom of her garden, surf the wave and hang out. There was never a shortage of volunteers whenever she needed anything!

same i have lived in the same apartment for 11 years and i don't know the names of the people in 3 of the other apartments..we have 5 total and the only reason i know 2 of their names is cause they cornered me in the laundry room and introduced themselves. otherwise i wouldn't of met them. i'm introverted and prefer my privacy and to be left alone and it's been working for all of us in our complex.

Into days times it is so wonderful to see people coming to help friends, neighbors and even people they don’t know but people that can some help. We seem to hear all the bad things so when I hear and see the good it honestly brings me to tears. 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

My sister was battering cancer for three years.we spent a lot of time on hospital visits. Our new neighbours saw how difficult it was for me tocweed our front garden as I have arthritis in my knees. So when we'd go to the hospital they'd sneak in and do it for me. My sister passed away before Christmas last year, so in the evening's they walk their dog past the house to check I'm ok. And they shop for me if I need it. They are so kind.

A second cousin of mine’s husband got bone cancer, and it was too late to save him. She never asked for help and hated receiving it, but her house was in shambles and she was barely able to keep afloat with her four kids. So when her and her family went away on a week long vacation for the last time, her mother arranged for the entire extended family of handymen and any neighbors that wanted to help come over. That week we redid her floors, put in new kitchen cabinets, bought her new furniture, and even redid the entire landscaping of her house with very low maintenance plants.

Not my neighbour, but after my mother passed away, my dad’s bosses from work delivered care packages of food and gifts to use. Less than a year later, those same people sent me a package while I was in Vancouver for brain surgery. It meant so much to my brother, dad, and me. Best. Bosses. Ever. 😊

Most of the messages are too blurry to read..All the stories were heartwarming. People of different ages, races & nationalities treating other people with kindness & respect...THIS IS THE WAY IT IS SUPPOSED TO BE. May God bless you all.

When we had new neighbors move in over a year ago my dad went next door and helped them unload their moving truck until it was empty. When my dad died in September, the fence we shared fell down around the same time. They took care of replacing it, including covering our share of the cost.

Last year, we had our furnance completely replaced (we used to have one fueled by coal, but we changed it to peas). In our case, that meant we had nothing to heat our house for about 3 nights(mind the fact that it was the middle of winter and the temperatures reached -15°C. We had to wait/sleep through them completely surrounded by blankets). At the time, some new neighbors moved in to the house next doors. One of those nights, the new lady called us and asked us if we'd like to stay at their place until we have the heating system fixed. She seemed very panicked. She explained that she just found out about everything and didn't want us to be cold. It really wasn't that bad though! Sure, it was pretty cold, but not as freezing as it was outside, and we had a lot of blankets and extra warm clothes that completely blocked off all the cold, so we thanked them and respectfully declined. Even though at the time I've only talked with them like, 2 times, from that day, I promised myself that I'll always remember that act of kindness and repay them if i can

This is proof that the World can heal itself. Be sincere and patient with others. Show them the way to kindness. The sign the 2 gentleman made says it all. Regardless of our differences we must practice love and compassion. It is the only way to a peaceful human existence.
