I watched this movie at 15. What got me was the line “ to understand that a little girl with more courage than she knew would find her prayers were answered. Can that not be called happiness?” This spoke to me deeply. It inspired me to go out into the world and live a notable story where I too can say that. That was almost 20 years ago now. I can say many of my prayers have been answered.😊

The little girl of this movie, made the movie what it was to me. It must have been unbearable to be taken away from your parents to live with strangers. It is so sad.

Whoever thinks that they went and lived happily ever after as a married couple didn't pay attention to the ending narration. "To a man Geisha can only be half a wife, we are the wives of nightfall." I heard in the book the chairman was already married and she wanted to be with him so much she became his mistress.

maybe im the only one, but I can not stop thinking about what was probably from her sister especially in this scene, don't know why but its really a amazing movie

freieLilith 5 Years ago and I have something to say, her sister ran away when they planned to do it together and Chiyo took too long. In the book she managed to get back to the village and with a boy and ran off with him. The father tells Chiyo that when she receives a death letter from him and two stones with her mother and fathers name on it.

The sister made it back to the village and Chiyo now Sayuri stays a Geisha

I didn't get this movie at all..!!?why does a child wants to be a geisha just because the chairman(who is almost more than double the age of the girl)showed a gesture of kindness towards to her!..!!

Abhi this comment is a bit late but ... When Chiyo got sold to the Geisha house early on she didn't want to be a Geisha at all. All she wanted was to find her sister again and run away. But after that attempt failed and her sister left her behind she also got told that her parents passed away. At that time she had nothing left and now she wasnt going to be a geisha but a servant to the house, because of her debts. She was around 10 that time. So at her lowest point she met the Chairman who showed her an act of kindness and told her that kindness is not something you deserve but something you receive out of luck. It makes an impact on a small child. Especially on a child who has not experienced kindness yet. In her point of view, the Chairman was the first person to be kind to her, to give her food, money, and more important he gave her kind words. At that point she didn't know it was love but she wanted to meet him again, and the only starting point she had, was that the Chairman was surrounded by Geishas. She wanted to be a part of his world, even if only as a Geisha. Sorry if it is too long lmao
