I actually kinda hate this has so many upvotes. yes, I thought Lex was defo a hypocrite and remains somewhat bitter to this day at the same time - that situation was SO specific, Rob and Lex were good friends outside the game. when you play for a million dollars and a good friend betrays you like THIS... you might be really mad too.

He should have kept Ethan and Jerry two people on Lex side. Vote Amber off take Ethan and Jerry to the merge instead of taking out Rob now that he is weakened without Amber make an alliance with him make him feel comfortable vote off Robs past alliance Robert Jenna so on Lex next move would be to make sure Rob wins immunity keep him around and vote out Ethan and Jerry Kathy so on. Big part of the plan be too win the last immunity and Lex takes Rob to the end no one liked Rob at that time Lex easy win and voting out Amber give him some brownie points.

Some context on the Lex situation: All-stars was the first ever returnee season. For the first time ever, people who actually already knew each other were playing together. Survivor was also at its most popular. These players were full-blown celebrities, and this was still a small, exclusive group of people with a shared experience that nobody outside the circle could relate to. Players would attend charity events and parties together without ever knowing they’d be playing against each other. Lex and Rob became close friends, but they weren’t the only ones obviously, Ethan had dated Amber and Jenna M, for example. Once all-stars was assembled, the idea of pre-game alliances showed up for the first time. Many survivors were already better friends with some than others, so obviously they wouldn’t commit social suicide by making pre-game agreements with anyone OUTSIDE their existing friend groups. Lex and Rob had the tightest pre-game alliance, but there were others. However, all of these alliances excluded the past winners. Tina, Ethan and Jenna M were basically informed straight up by the other members prior to the start of the season (mostly by Rob and Lex’s group) not to get their hopes up, past winners would be voted out fast (fun fact: Richard Hatch wasn’t informed as he was the most feared, and the pre-game alliances knew they had to blindside him or he’d probably figure out a way to save himself. Fun fact 2: Rob Cesternino was also excluded from all pre-game alliances as he was seen as too big a strategic threat despite not being a past winner). So much work was put in to set up a rigged season for Rob, Lex, big Tom, etc., to steamroll the game. Seems really dirty hearing it as an audience member for sure, but the core of it was a very real friendship, which at the time they never expected to be put at risk. This was after all the first ever returnee season. Lex voting out Ethan is seen as Lex being a real hypocrite, expecting Ethan to take the L like that. Of course, the full story is that Ethan knew he wasn’t making it to the end. In his final conversation with Lex, it was mentioned that Ethans goal was to make it to the jury, and he was pissed that 1) he wouldn’t be able to make the jury as intended (none of the past winners did of course) and 2) he was going home before Jerri, who he felt did not earn her place. He already knew from Lex before the game started, he was not making it very far. But he wasn’t happy to have only lasted that short. Lex had a good game going until he saved Amber, something that he would have NEVER done if this was a first-time season. Robs corny line of ‘you take care of her, I take care of you’ was made out to be the ‘main’ reason Lex saved her. That’s bullshit, he’s not that gullible. He saved Amber because Rob was like a sworn brother to Lex outside the game. He didn’t expect a ‘reward’ from Rob in return, he expected Rob to keep his word that was made long before the game started, that they were gonna do this together. But Rob gladly took the number, let Lex sacrifice one of his own, and then use that numbers advantage to get rid of Lex. So in a way, it felt like Rob had been building up a friendship with Lex for several years (IN REAL LIFE) just to misdirect and trick Lex once they got out in the million-dollar game. Lex voting out Ethan is not comparable to Rob voting out Lex. You can clearly see from Kathy’s reaction that this was not some simple manipulation done within the confines of the game. She was so appalled by it, despite being in a much more neutral position. Lex shows some character too in comforting her and insisting she save herself instead of him. The audience perspective is far from the perspective of the players in the season, who know the full story of what went on before the cameras even started rolling. This level of emotional investment into pre-game alliances has never been seen again in any returnee season, because of the important lessons learnt from all-stars. As a result, no returnee has been as deeply hurt after this, obviously. Personally, I dislike the idea of pre-game alliances, but it’s obviously inevitable given the circumstance. I would have really loved to see Richard Hatch and Tina go far. TLDR: Survivor is not just a game, it’s a social experiment. TV watchers aren’t going to understand things the same was as participants who are starving, malnourished, under rested and mentally/emotionally strained 24/7.

It's shocking to me how few people on this show are able to put themselves in someone else's shoes. Some of these players, including the ones I love most, have their heads so far up their own asses it defies the laws of physics. It's "just a game" when they're lying or screwing someone over, but then when it happens to them suddenly it's not "just a game" and it's treated like some serous personal attack. It's ridiculous. This mostly just goes for the older seasons, but not completely.
