This is Part 3 in this series of the old Maine hunting camp from 1940’s, 50’s, & 60’s. My father, grandfather,and other relatives used to hunt deer, wild hares, bear, & game birds. They also caught many of fish. The game they harvested on these hunts were to feed themselves & family. Sometimes the old gravel road to camp was washed out, and the men had to park their vehicles at the beginning of the road, and walk in. When the road was muddy & washed out in the Springtime, the men repaired the road themselves. In the Winter months they parked their vehicles at the beginning of the road (many times at a friends home nearby) and they would snow shoe in.
Their refrigeration was natural, either using the built-in window unit “natural camp refrigeration” to place cold goods in, or in the warmer months cold drinks would be kept in the natural spring (down the wooded path) where water was “oh so good”, and ice cold. They always had a metal bucket or two where the spring water was fetched, and brought in for drinking, cooking, & doing dishes. A long handled dipper was always kept in the bucket (serve yourself).
Whatever needed to be done at the camp in order to maintain & keep it running smoothly, was a done as a team. A helping hand was never far away.
The camp never had electricity, or plumbing. They used an outhouse if they needed to “go”.
I hope you enjoy this video (part 3), and thank you for stopping by.

Hey Kat . These pictures portray the old vintage Woolrich Plaid Red wool hunters suits . Many companies supplied commission services to Woolrich over years to supply this product since its popularity and quality were wanted by the hunting industry . My family's business that started in 1869 supplied the dyed wool black and red for Woolrich . Boy does this bring back memories !

I have a complete suit that I bought off ebay a number of years back. I often wish it could talk and tell the story of it's adventures. Sadly, I can't fit in it and they outlawed the old red plaid in favor of Orange. These pictures are priceless but it's a shame everyone is gone now.

This is exactly what anti hunters do not get , there is so much more than the hunting that goes with this great tradition, the memories that guys have at hunting camps are NEVER forgotten, and that's what hunting camps make . Very well done again .

My hunting camp time started in 1952 at age 5. Camp boy was my job until I was 8 then I started shooting partridge and rabbits. By 10 I was deer hunting in my green plaid, must have worked because I shot my 1st deer that year. I will never forget those times and all the people I met and hunted with. My family were great hunters and taught me all that was needed to make me the hunter I became. By the way that 1st deer was a nice 8 point.

I think after the men at camp did the things they needed to do around the camp to maintain, it became a leisure after the work was done. It got busy when anyone got a deer, with plenty to do, but I know my dad loved going there and it was very quiet and peaceful. Thank you for commenting and stopping by.

A big piece of Americana that we’re rapidly losing! Great pics and memories! Woolrich, Winchester, Savage, just to name a few makers of the popular items used at the deer camps. Hunting camp was looked forward to all year til it came time. You can almost smell the smells and hear the talk and laughter, and feel the cold biting through. No other experience comes close to deer camp. Good stuff!👍🦌🇺🇸❤️

This was great to watch. What I find interesting about deer camp is it brings together people from all walks of life. Life long friendships are made from the one thing in common which is hunting. Each year you look forward to seeing the same faces. Even if you haven't spoken in a year deer camp is like a time warp. Pick right up where you left off last year. Im part of a deer camp in allagash that goes back to the 60s. The third generation is due to take over organizing the annual logistics soon.

Memories of deer hunting in western and central New York, too. The Woolrich clothing also brings back the memories when every hunter in our acquaintances wore Woolrich jackets and hats; some even had the pants to match, including myself. But back then we in upstate NY were limited to using only shotguns with a single ball or slug. Many deer were taken via those shotguns which could be very accurate up to about 100 yards. Rifles are now legal for taking deer in Upstate, Central and Western NY

I’m heading upta camp in a few weeks. We have lost our patriarch of camp this year. It’s going to be a solemn time for sure. On the bright side… we have our memories and our other camp mates. And I did get a doe tag. This one is for Grumps.

@@TeaTimeDevotionsWithMimi Thank you ♥️ I’m sorry to hear about the flooding. I’ve done that before 🤫 Was a long time ago, but it happens. I am doing alright, thank you. Hello, Kat! Thx for sharing these pics, really fun to see. I enjoyed reading about it in your description. Made me think of my dad. For most of his life he and some friends/relatives had a hunting cabin about an hour away. I guess these types of outings are somewhat dying out. Loved the old car photo. Never saw a natural refrigeratation like that. Hopefully bears couldn't get into it. We had a natural spring growing up, good fresh spring water, but it has long since been contaminated. God bless you and have a lovely evening.😊🧡🍂

Hi Misha, thanks so much for sharing your memories. There’s not too many camps around like this anymore. Most of the men in these videos were my relatives. My cousin gave me these slides, which I was able to digitalize individually. I love seeing how young they all were. I really appreciate you stopping by, and I hope you have a blessed weekend ♥️🙏🌻🍂🍁

Could you show what that area looks like now? Is that building still standing? Has the land been turned into a house development?
@KatInTheNorth
@KatInTheNorth 9 ай бұрын
Hi, as far as I know, the building is still standing, but the area has changed quite a bit. A lot of 4 wheelers and dirt bikes go through there all the time, so it’s not as peaceful. No housing development yet. If I’m able to hike in there I will get some video of it sometime before the snow flies. Thanks for asking.

Back when boys learned how to be self sufficient. How to live off the land and use a firearm. It was a way for families and friends to bond. Some organizations frown on this today, because a self-sufficient man is truly a free man. We had a cabin and 100 acres everyone in the family would share. Good times.

Thank you! I appreciate your comments. These men fed their families on their harvests. The meat is so much better for you than what you find at the grocery store. Every deer hunting season, my father brought home a deer. It’s too bad some frown upon it.
