I’m from Bennettsville also. Your memory about the vegetable soup and sandwiches at the school cafeteria are exactly the same as mine. I never forgot 9:45 how good those meals were and the vegetable soup and sandwiches were always served on Fridays. I still remember my 4th grade teacher Mrs. McPhail also. Thanks for the memories Tony.

I lived in Bennettsville 1963 - 1967. I lived on West Main St.. Great footage of the town and walking down memory lane with the towns street views, the Powers Hotel, the police station and fire department....friends dad was a fireman and we used to stop by when he was on duty. I played football and baseball down the hill from the hotel. During summer, would ride the bike out to Lake Wallace and hang out most of the day. Thanks for the video....great memories of Bennettsville times. (Gary DeBruhl)

I live in this small town I remember when that ice Co was opened. I think it was open up until I was about 5 or 6 years old, I’m now 28. I live near my grandparents now. My grandma went to the school by the now Library growing up. The Lake now has activities and such for the kids but there’s not as much action downtown like there was back in the day. I would love to go back in time and see how it was. I knew the Bennettsville civic center was once a movie theater, stories from grandma. Me and her used to go to the Blues Brothers show when the high school was doing it. I miss how Bennettsville was when I was growing up myself. So many great memories in my childhood too in Bennettsville. 💗

I have mixed feelings about Bennettsvile, my family wasn't treated too well there in the past (from the 18th century up until the 20th). I still have some family members who live there and have attended family reunions (The Browns) about as recent as 3 years ago (2018).

I am Diane Alexson, born in Bennettsville and left in 2003. Tony, I feel need to correct you on 4:39. Bair Drug was on the corner of Marlboro & Market and Rose's was beside the Western Auto
@CAROLINATONY
@CAROLINATONY 2 жыл бұрын
Bair drug was on market and marolboro but in the 50s & 60s it was on the corner of broad and main. Roses was next to the western auto and Eagles was on the opposite corner of Bair Drug.
@jessicawhitten7484
@jessicawhitten7484 2 жыл бұрын
@@CAROLINATONY I was born in 1963, so I don't remember Bair Drug being any where else. I am just old enough to remember when the Post Office was on the corner of Broad & McColl Street. And I remember when a certain fellow named Rick Hendrix(?) of NASCAR fame had the Chevrolet place on the corner of Main & Cheraw Street. If you ever went to the fish market on Broad Street between the hardware store & Breeden's grocery, you probably know my grandparents Harry & Meta Drew or my Uncle Danny Drew
@CAROLINATONY
@CAROLINATONY 2 жыл бұрын
@@jessicawhitten7484 I was born in 56. I thought a Williams man had that fish market but I might be mistaken. Where Bair drug was in the 70s before that it was R. W Walkers they did tires and front ends. My daddy worked there.

I get a lot of compliments on my KZbin video , " Memories of Bennettsville , South Carolina " . I am glad to see you did one too , I am a fan and you commented on my video of Cheraw . I get to Bennettsville about every 5 years and stroll down memory lane . I too remember those peanut butter sandwiches because they put honey on it to make it good and sweet . The vegetable soup was good , but you forgot about the square pizza , the best . They also had an aluminum cover going over the sidewalk to the cafeteria . I loved the old library and when they built the new one around 1980 it became the recreation center . The new library was by the Police Department and First United Methodist Church at the top of the hill on Market Street . The Confederate Monument is in Ripley's Believe It or Not because it is a Union Soldier and it was an accident and since the county didn't have the money to replace , they left him up there . My father told me in the 50's the school would go to the Confederate Monument and put flowers on it once a year . I have 5 relatives that served in the Confederate Army during the Civil War . I remember going to the Murchison School in 6th grade and going to the auditorium in the back for things like Scared Straight . The old high school next door that used to be there , I went to 5th grade there . Jr High was at Lake Paul Wallace and the Primary School was on the other side of the lake near the golf course . I graduated in 1985 , the last year before they consolidated . I went in the Army in 1985 to Germany . I now live in Las Vegas . I have tons of memories there . I could go on and on . I lived on Market Street about a block away from the theater . You should have mentioned about Hospital Hill and how everyone's parents would teach their kids to hold the clutch on a manual transmission and not roll down that steep hill . Ha ha .

That’s okay tony I don’t like wearing lipstick either ha ha. A lot of my memories revolve around food also, I been eating at my local diners and delis regularly since I was old enough to know. Very beautiful small town. My home town isn’t like this at all. My hometown is more concerned with tearing down historic buildings to build Mexican restaurants, McDonald’s, and travel centers. Not to mention we have 3 Walmart’s in our small town. Still though, there’s no place like home 🏠
