Great series, TY. Growing up in NYC I knew nothing of my parents' experience in Ireland during the Irish War of Indepedence and the Civil War. But I rembered certain brief statements - one that muy mother's house was burned down 3 times. In HS, at my father's wake, I learned he was active in the War of Independence. Later I learned his younger brother was a hero in that war and in the National Army. I also learned my mother was an old IRA messenger. I had no idea that my grandfather sent 13 tears in hard labor for resisting an eviction, befiore he went to the USA and returned with a nice sum of money. And so on more detail emerged. It not only was an ocean away but also it seemed centuries ago. In my 60s I had a conversation with an Irish student in New England. He was amazed that parents (not grandparents) were active in the War of Independence. I did look in my 40s rather than 60s.

This was a very interesting and well made series. My relatives came from Athlone and my parents lived through this period. I have always been curious about what it was like, but they didn’t ever want to say much about it. I learned a lot from this.

This series over all was interesting but in this segment not enough mentioning of the reasons for the big house burnigs such as since there was a war going then British forces army auxiliaries were commandeering some i if the big house another reason we're ancestral many had bad reputations like evicting the I r a grandparents those feelings memories ran deep in this segment people spoke as though every landlord was good kind etc I would say they were the minority then I m glad Tom Dooley who has for decades written about the big house in Ireland in coming out with a book soon the big house burnings1920 to 1923 long overdue an underrated part of the Irish revolution Tom Barry the renown I r a leader of West Cork may have been right in the kidnapping if the Earl of bandon not only prevented I r a men from being executed but may have helped bring about a truce bernard castle burned down just a couple of weeks before the truce with the aristocracy attacked one can t say you have control of the country also the legendary Longford leader Sean mackeoen deserves an in depth biography since he s mentioned in this episode

Disagrees strategic in the military sense political in the reset sense and cultural in no longer being treated as second class citizens so to me poetic justice
