This is fascinating to watch, Josh. I am really enjoying seeing your process and learning from it. The inside of my head is pretty crazy too, so don't feel bad about yours! I'm sure other people are the same. I suffer from acute M.E. and have spent many years very unwell and very much inside my head, because I was so unwell and debilitated I couldn't do anything. It made me very aware of how my thoughts and memory work. To occupy my mind and distract myself from my illness I would play little games inside my head - for example, how many animals can I think of that begin with "g" and I'd make a mental list. I'd try to keep a count as I went. I'd then try the same thing a day later and see if I could get more. I gave myself other challenges too, and it amazed me to see what even a very unwell and fatigued brain could do. Without me deliberately meaning to, my mind created pictures and associations to remember things: cues, patterns, etc. My condition is improving and I am able to do more now. And having become a little bit more familiar with this inside of my head and what it can do, I am intrigued to try learning things off by heart. I am learning some Scots poetry (I'm from Scotland) as well as trying to learn Psalm 1, which I really love. Thanks for all your advice and sharing your process with us, it's really interesting. Best wishes and love from Claire in Scotland.

You have inspired me to start memorizing large sections of scripture! I’m starting with Isaiah 52:13 - 53… because I have been half-way working on it…. It’s a common struggle, so don’t be too discouraged. If I were you, I would do two things: first, set yourself a very small goal, like just working on memorizing or reviewing for 5 minutes a day, that’s all. Second, I would try to find someone to do it with so you can have a partner in this.

One more question. How detailed do you get in keeping a record of your image stories? Or do you just have the opening image.
@BibleMemoryGoal
@BibleMemoryGoal Жыл бұрын
Great question, David (and thanks for supporting as a member!). For me, if I know a verse well, I tend to simply put an image that will remind me of the first word or two, just to help me get started with the verse. Or you could put an image to remind you of the overall meaning. But I don’t see a need to make it too complicated.
@BibleMemoryGoal

The answer to your second question depends on how my review goes. If I find myself forgetting words or verses, I’ll have to get more detailed. If I don’t, I won’t.

I don't understand the memory palace technique, it just doesn't make sense to me and seems like you're trying to use a wrench to hammer a nail. It seems way harder than the technique I used to memorize over 10 books consisting over 6500 verses.
@BibleMemoryGoal
@BibleMemoryGoal 2 жыл бұрын
That’s interesting. I know that the memory palace technique has been around for more than a thousand years and is still used by every single memory champion that competes today. But perhaps they need to learn your technique instead?
@wackzingo
@wackzingo 2 жыл бұрын
@@BibleMemoryGoal I'm not here to argue, I just don't understand it. Do you go around trying to memorize an entire deck of cards in a 2 minutes? It's very different from memorizing large amounts of text verbatim. The mind palace concept isn't even possible for many people like those with short-term memory deficits. ADHD as an example is primarily a deficit in short-term memory as a result of decreased activity in the prefrontal cortex which is why stimulants help them. The ability to visualize things in your mind is highly dependent on short-term memory. That's why they struggle with mental math as one example. I think a more relevant place to look is in bible quizzing. I have been involved in bible quizzing ministry for over 25 years now and seen literally hundreds of teens memorize these books: 1 & 2 Corinthians, John, Hebrews., 1 & 2 Peter, Matthew, Romans, James, Acts, Galatians, Ephesians, Philippians, Colossians, Philemon, and Luke. I have never once heard anyone ever even mention memory palace in quizzing. I'm sure some might have used it, but I've never about it being used. I'm just saying I don't understand this method. That's great if it works for you and I love what your channel is about though.
@wackzingo
@wackzingo 2 жыл бұрын
@@BibleMemoryGoal here's another way to look at it. This is quote from Steve McConnell, an expert in software engineering, "Building a 4-foot tower requires a steady hand, a flat surface, and 10 undamaged beer cans. Building a tower 100 times that size doesn't merely require 100 times as many beer cans. It requires a different kind of planning and construction altogether." Apply that to 52 cards in a deck vs 24229 words in the book of acts. That's just a list of words in a very specific order. I'm just saying, seems like it might require a completely different technique if you're going to apply it so something 465x larger.
@wackzingo
@wackzingo 2 жыл бұрын
I would even quote from the book, "Your Memory: How it works and how to improve it", the author states, "Verbatim Memory Some memory tasks may require word-for-word memorizing (for example, learning scriptures, poems, scripts, etc.). Mnemonic systems are not especially appropriate for such verbatim memory tasks. When people ask me how to memorize these kinds of materials verbatim, I refer them to the memorizing strategies discussed in chapter 6. We will see in subsequent chapters that mnemonic systems can help in remembering the main points or ideas covered in such materials and in getting these points in the right order, thus providing a framework within which the exact words can then be learned. But the systems do not help much directly in the word-for-word memory part of the task."
@BibleMemoryGoal
@BibleMemoryGoal 2 жыл бұрын
Have you seen how I've used the memory palace technique? I use the palace to organize chapters and verses so that I can find them easily, and then I use various mnemonic techniques to "encode" the verse to each of those locations. So sure, a memory palace may not be great for word-for-word, but it can be used in conjunction with other techniques to achieve what I am personally wanting to do: memorizing word-for-word with a recall of exact chapter and verse locations within each book that I memorize.
