Thank you for being so honest and including #6. I have several Scripture recitation videos on my channel and none of them are perfectly polished.😐 Watching you talk about #6 makes me feel a little better about it. 😁 I do still believe perfection is a great goal to strive for though.🙂

Absolutely! The hard thing is that I can know a passage perfectly but still stumble as I try to say it out loud.

#6 was my favorite point of your video too @Josh Summers ! I remember feeling SO RELIEVED when I started watching videos from other BMG community members and they all included a few mistakes.

I so loved this video Josh! I am definitely going to reference this video and share some of these for my next Scripture Memory Workshop. I also love what you said: "It's not memory; it's time spent memorizing." I try to tell my parents and other friends and family who say I have an amazing memory and this is an articulate and more concise way of what I've been trying to tell them. I usually say, "I don't have a good memory; it's me taking time to commit it to memory." Thanks so much brother! 🙂

My scripture memory has been better in the past. But, I memorize slowly since I think about each word so deeply.

That's ok! There's no "correct speed".

Jody Brownd here… on the subject of being polished… I have that problem but it’s worse… I never can get my videos out because they are never good enough. I delete hours and hours worth of attempts. Yeesh.

Hi Josh I know a number of born-again Christian who are memorising The Bible, But they are still behaving like the devil, on Sunday morning. a) How do I avoid that? b) How do I internalise The Word, so that I become more like Jesus? Please. Thank you. PS Please will you allow Josh to reply first, before you make a comment. Thank you. 😊 👍

All of us who are memorizing the Bible have to learn how to apply it to our lives. We don’t memorize because we’re already perfect! We memorize so that we can have a constant reminder of what God’s word says when we’re faced with temptation or various decisions. Keep memorizing! And keep asking God to teach you how to be more like Him. And it doesn’t hurt to find a mentor if you know of anybody near you.

I want to memorize scripture but I always get burnt out and legalistic about it. Plus I’m a student and it’s hard to do that at the same time 🙄🙄

There are certainly different seasons of life, but sometimes people get burned out because they're trying to memorize too much at once. What was your pace in the past?

@@BibleMemoryGoal Well I tried to memorize 1 John. I tried to do one verse a day. After a while I stopped because some nights I would be too tired to memorize my verse and I guess I got overwhelmed.

One of the reasons Christians shouldn't feel prideful or feel like they can show off about scripture memory is because it is generally a lost discipline, and those who do some consistent memorizing, I think that most are still not as far along as others I will mention. For instance, as I understand it, Even Christians who dedicate themselves scripture memory are far behind Muslims who are dedicated to memorizing the Quran. And there are many people who love Shakespeare who have memorized for more Shakespeare than some of our best scripture memorizers have memorized the New Testament. And let's not forget the discipline still an existence in many monasteries today, and was probably in every monastery centuries ago, that one had to memorize the book of Psalms. Further, the longest it typically Took monastics to memorize the psalms was two years. And some did it less than half a year. And let's not forget that in orthodox Judaism, there are many, certainly probably most among rabbis, that have memorize the Torah, while many Christian pastors have not memorized all that much of the New Testament. So, these things should help us realize that for most Christians memorizing scripture, we are not in first, second, or third place. On the one hand, we are not in a competition. On the other hand, our discipline in the art of memorization is sort of pulling up the rear.
