When Joseph went over the details of her life: Assaulted by father, by some boys in school, single mother, alcoholic, etc. It made me think of everyone’s summarized personal history, and how tragic it can sound (and be). If someone were to make a movie about my mom’s tragedies or mine, I don’t know that you could see the writing on the wall necessarily (rn), or how any of us got to where we are currently. I’m sure a lot of us can provide a tragic summary of our lives. But hopefully most of you got a happy ending, a way to make the best of it. Joseph, you’ve made me want to watch this movie. Nick seemed so connected and in tune with her bleak reality. Thanks both for this review as always. I love when y’all introduce me to smaller/indie films.

Peter Sarsgaard doesn't get enough recognition. I adore him. A friend of mine worked with him on set of a few films and said he's delightful. I'll watch anything with both of these leads.

I thought this was a beautiful movie… the depiction of Sylvia as so shut down, trying to protect the world from getting to her or her daughter. And then she meets Saul, who because of his dementia cannot manage his life, but he offers her warmth, a quiet love, and desire. Although Sylvia does do a pretty rapid 180* (or time is compressed?), she opens up, she finds love and connection and support as she struggles to reach beyond her traumatic past. I liked it very much.

When they do, I tend to either agree with Joseph (Blonde, The Creator) or split down the middle (Stars At Noon).

I want to see this film for this very reason as well. Both Nick and Joseph are fun to watch and I faithfully watch these enjoyable reviews. They have incredible dynamics with one another. It is so obvious why they are married to one another. Sometimes Nick can be too harsh. However he has a discerning eye and comes up with funny one liners. Joseph is more laid back. I relate to him slightly more because he comes across as having a "keeping it real" mindset.

Sounds so good. I love great scene work and the unveiling of people’s interior complications. They sound like hot messes. I’m sure Jessica eats this up.

An exceptional film - carefully crafted with deep and meaningful exploration of trauma, abuse and how each character interprets the issues through memory and interpretation. Each member of the family have their way of coping and addressing issues (right or wrong). It's about people dealing and choose to stay and work it out. To live with people they love who are going through health issues and finding some form of resolution.

I know this isn't the point of the movie, but does the film ever reveal who actually assaulted Jessicas character? Or why/how she thought it was Peter Sarsgaards character? It seems like such a difficult thing to be able to get past, going from 100% certain it's him to accepting 100% it wasn't. Especially w/the history with her dad & the fact that her mother doesnt believe her. Not sure why my brain got sort of 'stuck' on that aspect.

I think she mentioned that a person named Bean that was letting her to drink. She thought Saul was one of his friends since he approached her at the reunion and then followed her in a creepy way. I explained that maybe her memory of faces was mixed up since she was only 12 when she getting drunk at that age. Then her sister explained that it was impossible for it to be him since Saul's family had moved to the city in the same year she transferred to a different school.

Her sister tells her mom and the mom is the one who says it wasn’t him . later .. she finds a pic of him and sees he did go to her school it was him but lets it go bc she believes he has dementia also you find out the mom protected the father .. so the mom lied to protect the guy as well -worth watching again a lot of sinister things people are overlooking

I really liked it. 4 out of 5 stars for me for a romance-drama film. "Memory" is now among the romance-dramas that I will certainly remember (pun intended). As usual, solid acting performances by Peter Saarsgard and Jessica Chastain. It's a dark, complex, painful and unusual love story which was beautifully presented by the mature and subdued acting of Peter and Jessica. I believe that Saul and Sylvia will stay together but will struggle doing so mainly because of his illness and her traumatic past. They will certainly have many challenges ahead of them but I think they will overcome those mainly because of Sylvia's resolve (she was able to overcome rape and alcoholism) and Saul's seemingly genuine love and deep affection for her. P.S. I also liked the theme song a lot and I think the melody and the way the singer sang it perfectly matched the mood of the movie. I actually ended up doing a little research about the song, its background and its meaning.

This movie is haunting bc there are hints she might be trying to to right a wrong and he really is the guy from school and he might be a perv and history might repeat its self.. that little bit of doubt leaves you feeling as paranoid as Jessica’s character in the beginning of the movie … ughhh

Ironically, because Joseph lists down the 'dreary collection' of problems the Day Care Center 'caregiver' had - it made the plot more quizzical! The viewer's initial focus was placed on the most obvious, dementia afflicted Saul. Both of you had *perfectly fair endings for this couple too* So, they both either 'healed' each other with 'selective memory' in the end, or may be not! Like Nick nicely surmises: "He seemed to care about the two main characters." 😉Both of you gave the perfect score true to your personal taste for its story arc😊

If this was sci-fi with heavy symbolism, it'd be parallel individual universes. Able to experience the people, but not their universe. Or Victorian, looking-glass supernatural. Most have clear, clean, maintained, rose-colored glass, while some have dirty, cracked, duck taped glass no one wants to look through.
