Als Tohopesate werden Bündnisse zwischen Hansestädten bezeichnet, die eine Sicherung der städtischen Freiheit und handelswirtschaftlichen Interessen der beteiligten Städte insbesondere gegen fürstliche Bedrohung zum Ziel hatten. Ihren Höhepunkt erlebte diese Form interkommunaler Bündnispolitik im 15. Jahrhundert. Die Tohopesate von 1476, die inhaltlich an mehrere frühere Vereinbarungen anschloss, ist nicht zuletzt wegen der großen Teilnehmerzahl und des weiten Geltungsbereiches, der weit ins hansische Binnenland reichte, ein besonders geeignetes Beispiel für diese spezielle Form hansestädtischer Archivalien. Teilnehmer der Tohopesate waren die Städte Lübeck, Bremen, Hamburg, Rostock, Stralsund, Wismar, Lüneburg, Stade, Uelzen, Magdeburg, Braunschweig, Halle/Saale, Halberstadt, Goslar, Hildesheim, Göttingen, Stendal, Hannover und Einbeck.

A Tohopesate ('sitting down together') is the technical term used to designate alliances of Hanse towns which were intended to secure the autonomy of the towns and protect their trade routes against the depredations of princes. The high point of this form of inter-urban alliance-making was reached in the fifteenth century. The alliance of 1476, in content heavily indebted to previous Tohopesaten, is chiefly notable for the large number of parties to the treaty (Lübeck, Bremen, Hamburg, Rostock, Stralsund, Wismar, Lüneburg, Stade, Ülzen, Magdeburg, Brunswick, Halle/Saale, Halberstadt, Goslar, Hildesheim, Göttingen, Stendal, Hannover and Einbeck) and for its geographical scope, reaching as it did far into the heartland of the Hanse. As such, it is an example par excellence for this form of cooperation between Hanse towns.
