Does The Name Of Your Candle Affect Sales?

Names are a funny thing. I had a handmade soap business from 2002 to about 2010 and we had an old English/medieval/Dickens England theme going and all my fragrances had names. Patchouli was Nottingham Knights, lavender was English Enchantment, cranberry and fig was Dickens Delight during the year and Dickens Christmas during the holidays and so on. At one point, I got tired of trying to come up with names and started resorting to calling each soap by the fragrance or essential oil name. Boy did I get the complaints. My customers loved the names I gave to everything. Nothing else changed but the names and it made a huge difference. We didn't do a lot of wholesale, but our top three sellers were always oatmeal, milk and honey, lavender and a blend I make of pine, patchouli and sandalwood. So I kept the names. To this day I still bump into people that bought my soap and remember the names. When we were house hunting one time we walked into the bathroom and there was my soap in the soap dish. LOL!!! What I think is people concentrated more on the smell of the soap when they didn't know exactly what it was. If I had labeled Mystic Woods as pine, patchouli and sandalwood, I think some people would not have bothered to stop and smell it because they could say oh I hate patchouli or whatever. But by calling it Mystic Woods, it made it seem a bit more exotic maybe and they would pick it up and smell it. Just my thoughts on candle and soap names.

I think about this a lot in my business! It was very interesting to see the comparison between sales between names- thank you very much for sharing! I love that people feel protective of Saturday Morning Cartoons for you. That's just sweet ❤ I have a similar story - when I started using that name I went on my favorite soaping group and mentioned it... and found out that two other soapers had been using it for a long time. But even knowing that, my family gets SO protective when they see someone else using the name! 😂 I tell them "what can I say? All of us are just collectively BRILLIANT at naming things!" 😂 It really is a brilliant name, if I do say so myself! 😁 I hope you'll update us on how the Lemon Sandalwood goes or if you decide to try another name! Maybe Vanilla Cherry Citrus? 🍊

Lemon and Sandalwood sounds like an acquired taste. Highly recommend changing the name of this product for your wholesale customers. With a simple tweak, I think your sales would increase. Have a look at the other scent notes in the blend. Absolutely love your channel. Best wishes from 🇬🇧

I agree! I would imagine lemon and sandalwood be a more earthy fragrance rather than footloops or cereal.

I think it really does matter, at least to me it does. I won’t buy a candle with vulgar language/words in the name or if it references body parts etc. I think it’s just lacking in intelligence when you can’t use words other than vulgarity. I don’t want my kids or grandkids reading that kind of garbage.

I believe your son is doing amazing❤People love Eucalyptus. I accidentally mixed my eucalyptus fragrance with another scent and it became my best seller. I started mixing my scent of on set. I actually got fruit loops from you and I named it the morning shenanigans . It amazing how people like fruit loops. Thank you Erica for a wonderful video ❤

It's so crazy how the name of a candle will do that! I have had a few fragrances that didn't move in my shop and I decided to rename them and boom, one became a best seller for me!

Why not ? I do as well it’s definitely more streams of income and getting your products out into the world, many do retail & wholesale it definitely increases your customer base & getting your products into stores, as well as revenue 😊
